The New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute provides care to New Mexicans across six different divisions including hospital level inpatient psychiatric care for both civil and forensic commitments, residential treatment for adolescents, outpatient care for people with behavioral health disorders, detox and residential substance use treatment, and skilled/long-term care. As the largest behavioral health complex in the state, inpatient/residential care is provided to over 250 New Mexicans every day, along with 400 outpatient clients a month. There are over 600 employees across all the divisions of NMBHI to ensure high-quality treatment and care is delivered.

Why does the job exist?

 
The Nurse Coordinator will be assigned to the Admissions Department of the expanding Forensic Division. Assist in clinical review and analyzing admission and medical documentation within time-sensitive, statutory obligations. The Nurse Coordinator will discuss clinical issues with health care providers to ensure reliable continuity-of-care, and serve in the coordination of screening, acceptance, diversion, and pre-admission assessment of all referrals to Forensic Division of NMBHI. The Nurse Coordinator will assist the Division Director in data collection and clinical reviews necessary for forensic-clinical system audits, statistically analysis, and quality assurance and performance improvement.

How does it get done?

 
Clinical review and analysis of required documentation for admission Quality assurance and admissions coordination of psychiatric and medically complicated referrals within statutory timeframes
Data collection, audits, statistical analysis of institutional restoration rates, and performance improvement under Division Director or designee, according to state statutes and other regulations
Ensure confidentiality and protect sensitive patient and organizational information while also maintaining professionalism and customer service.

Who are the customers?

 
Patients are referred to NMBHI from the judicial system in response to not being found competency to proceed in trial. These patients are sent for restoration treatment in order to aid and assist in moving forward with the charges against them. Referral may come from any judicial district in the state. At times, patients may stay beyond the initial competency restoration treatment for up to the length of time had they been convicted of the crime they are alleged to have committed.

Ideal Candidate

 
Experience in clinical, correctional or forensic nursing.
Experience in inpatient psychiatric setting.
Experience as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team.
Experience in navigating and working with representatives within the network of the state judicial system.

Minimum Qualification

 
Must possess a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New Mexico, or eligibility for such licensure in accordance with New Mexico requirements, or eligibility for a temporary license issued for employment at a specific institution in New Mexico and three (3) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification.

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Must obtain a defensive driving certificate.

Working Conditions

 
This position will work in an office setting with exposure to Visual Video Display Terminal, personal computer, and phone usage. The work is in a psychiatric hospital setting with patients who struggle with mental illness and could present with unpredictable behavior.
