Epidemiology Disease Investigator Supervisor

The purpose of this position is to supervise Epidemiology Disease Investigators in the investigation and monitoring of known or potential sources of suspected infections and/or communicable diseases to ensure rapid intervention to prevent the spread of disease.

We Require

  • Three years of experience working with the public conducting health related field investigations, community outreach, case management, or working in a medical field doing case investigative work, and/or counseling clients

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Health Services, Public Administration, or closely related field.

  • An equivalent combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year for year basis.

Job Contributions

  • Provides supervision, guidance, direction, coaching, to a group of Epidemiology Disease Investigators.

  • Coordinates investigations and follow-up with suspect cases to determine disease origin.

  • Works in concert with healthcare partners to mitigate disease spread.

  • Implements work plan for assigned staff, assigns work activities, monitors workflow, and reviews and evaluates work methods and procedures.

  • Reviews investigation records and case documentation, makes recommendations for appropriate case management and case closure.

  • Performs quality improvement activities to improve teamwork flow.

  • Develops and implements data collection criteria, analyzes case management, and develop disease intervention strategies.

  • Interviews clients to obtain epidemiological information and determine contacts; may include conducting home visits and referring patients to medical provider for diagnosis, treatment, and care.

  • Maintains case documentation of patient and family encounters.

  • Coordinates collection of specimens and submits samples for laboratory testing

  • Tracks and locates clients or contacts throughout Maricopa County who suffer from or were exposed to communicable disease.

  • Provides related information and education to clients, medical providers, community, and staff.

Working Conditions

  • Most work is performed in an office environment

  • Position may require travel to and from job-related locations during a scheduled workday, subject to County policies regarding the use of County vehicles or private vehicles on County business

  • Valid Arizona driver’s license is required upon hire

  • Must be able to participate in emergency response training as scheduled and be available to respond as directed in the event of a public health emergency

  • Must be able to work on-call periodically

  • Within one month of hire, all employees will be required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses for any position within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health; required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (whooping cough and diphtheria), Varicella (chickenpox), and annual Influenza; some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test
