Requirements
The Work Unit:
The work unit exists to prevent radiation injury to persons and contamination of the environment by regulating the possession, use, handling storage, transportation and disposal of radioactive materials. This is accomplished by issuing radioactive materials licenses and conducting compliance activities. Natural occurrences of radioactive materials in the environment are investigated for possible health risks to populations and to determine if regulatory control of the materials for protection of citizens is warranted.What you will be doing:
This position exists to review basic, uncomplicated types of Radioactive Materials License applications - new, renewal, amend, and terminate; send Requests for Information when required for each type; write specific licenses; answer both written and telephone inquiries about Radioactive Materials Licenses and Inspections; accompany inspectors on License Compliance Inspections; participates in department’s response to incidents of radioactive materials mistakes and/or accidents. Only basic types of licenses will be reviewed and inspected.Job Duties:
Radioactive Materials Inspections• Under direct supervision or as a team member, inspects licensees for proper use of radioactive material including examination of all records including but not limited to
o personnel monitoring and notification;
o required sequence of leak testing of devices;
o correct acceptance of deliveries;
o correct shipping and disposal; and
o proper notification of incidents and medical events.
• Examination of facilities including areas of use and/or preparation, storage compartment or area, transporting vehicles, shipping and/or receiving area.
• Travel independently throughout the state. Independently inspects uncomplicated and complicated licenses with supervision provided as needed.
Radioactive Materials Licensing
• Under direct supervision, reviews radioactive materials license applications for new licenses, renewals, amendments and terminations.
• Determines if applications are complete with all required information submitted including but not limited to
o that devices and materials to be used are correct and do not exceed manufacturers specifications for level of radioactivity;
o that all users are properly trained, experienced, and documented; and
o that locations of use and storage are properly and correctly labeled.
• License reviews may also include off site visits to the facilities proposed for licensing.
Application Deficiencies Correspondence
• Under direct supervision, creates and writes letters requesting additional information from licensees in order to complete the application for radioactive materials licensing or to resolve compliance issues including but not limited to
o user documentation for specific training in safe use of specific radioactive material;
o proper facilities for use and storage of radioactive materials;
o correct sources and activities for specific device;
o correct methods of shipping and/or receiving radioactive material;
o lawful transportation of radioactive material; and
o proper monitoring of personnel.
• Drafts compliance letters.
• Correspondence may include off site travel to the sites where licensees operate to verify conditions prior to authorizations being granted.
Radioactive Materials Regulations, Polices, and Procedures
• Works with existing staff to review and update statutory and regulatory framework, and policies and procedures for the use of radioactive materials.
• Performs work in support of the program’s mission, as assigned.
Radioactive Materials Emergency Response
• Under supervision and as appropriate, supports the response to emergencies and incidents involving radioactive materials in Colorado through technical advice and onsite surveys and analysis, and through oversight and direction of post-incident cleanup activities.
Other Duties as Assigned
• Attends meetings, serves on task forces or teams, completes projects, and performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
• Performs work in support of research and investigations that are non-routinely carried out in support of the program’s mission.
• This item may include off site travel to the sites where licensees operate and/or where unlicensed radioactive materials incidents occur.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Five (5) years of full-time work experience demonstrating knowledge of and experience with radiation control regulations.
OR
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in health physics, biology, chemistry, geology, environmental science, engineering (chemical, environmental), industrial hygiene, or a related field.
AND
One (1) year of experience in demonstrating knowledge of and experience with radiation control regulations, or a TENORM program.
Substitutions
A combination of professional experience in health physics, biology, chemistry, geology, environmental science, engineering, industrial hygiene as described in the minimum qualifications above, which provided the same kind, amount and level of knowledge acquired in the required education, may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the bachelor's degree.

In addition to the minimum requirements, the successful candidate in this position will have the following experience:
- Knowledge and experience providing technical oversight of the characterization and control of radioactive materials.
- Experience conducting technical reviews, audits and/or inspections.
