Job Summary

The Environmental Health Inspector II is a mid-level position responsible for conducting inspections, investigations, and assessments related to public health and environmental safety. This position ensures that businesses, facilities, and organizations comply with environmental health regulations to protect the community’s health. The Environmental Health Inspector II works independently with some oversight from supervisors and provides guidance to entry-level inspectors.

Primary Responsibilities

Conduct regular inspections and investigations of facilities, including food establishments, hotels, schools, waste disposal sites, and water systems, to ensure compliance with environmental health standards.Identify and document violations of health and safety codes and recommend corrective actions.Educate facility owners and operators about health regulations and best practices for compliance.Prepare detailed reports on inspections, violations, and corrective actions.Assist in the planning and execution of public health initiatives, including disease control measures and health education programs.Respond to public health emergencies and environmental complaints as needed.Maintain accurate records of inspections, citations, and enforcement actions.

Knowledge and Skills

Comprehensive knowledge of environmental health regulations, sanitation, food safety, water quality standards, and other related areas.Strong inspection and investigation skills, data collection, and report writing.Proficiency in using inspection tools and relevant software.Ability to enforce regulations fairly and impartially, communicate effectively with facility operators and the public, and analyze environmental health data to make informed decisions.Certification as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) or eligible for certification.Knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental health regulations and enforcement practices.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, public health, biology, or a related field. At least 2 years of experience in environmental health inspection or a closely related field.

Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
