Job Description
The Information Specialist (IS IV) works under the direction of the Injury Prevention Unit (IPU) Director. Performs informational and communications work involving the collection of information to develop, create, and produce content and materials for release to various communications media (broadcast, print, digital, and/or social) and for use by the agency, the general public, and other government agencies. This position performs highly advanced (senior level) informational, consultative services, technical assistance, communication materials, and oversight of multiple operational aspects of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) grants and legislatively funded projects, and related programs in the IPU. This work includes program support of media development and ongoing injury prevention initiatives. This position may represent IPU and the injury prevention unit on agency-wide committees. This position will coordinate with the Injury Prevention Unit on activities and progress. This position will prepare data-sharing materials, presentations, briefings, and other documents for the Program, Unit, Section, Medical Director, and/or the Division Deputy Commissioner. This position will serve as the communications coordinator on IPU projects and/or initiatives as well as other Unit initiatives to improve program communications. This position works under minimal supervision with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. To perform these job duties, this position may require working extra hours needed to meet defined deadlines and support the agency’s mission critical reporting requirements.
Essential Job Functions
Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
(30%) Performs highly advanced (senior level) consultative services, technical assistance, communication materials, and oversight of multiple operational aspects of the grant and legislatively funded programs. Plans and executes public information programs, conferences, seminars, workshops, and public hearings. Obtains art and photographs for presentations, publications, and audiovisual productions. Analyzes content for accessibility and recommends changes to make content. Plans layout, design, illustration, production, color selection, and ink and paper selection for artwork. This work includes program support of media development and ongoing IPU initiatives, such as EMS and Trauma Registry (EMSTR), Child Fatality Review Team (CFRT), Texas Violent Death Reporting System (TVDRS), Texas Overdose Data to Action (TODA), and Safe Riders Child Passenger Safety.
(25%) Facilitates alignment and coordination of IPU communication activities, develops priorities for achieving unit communication goals and participates in program activities. Identifies opportunities to further strategic goals. Guides staff on appropriate communication of projects to maximize the success of the IPU and participates in planning and convening meetings or conferences. Creates and analyze reports on social media or web activity and its effectiveness. Monitor content on social media sites and/or prepare content and general comments for posting. Develop strategies and tools to improve social media presence. Conducts marketing outreach to community and professional groups to promote interest in agency activities. Evaluate effectiveness of news and information content produced by the organization and coordinate its distribution. Consult with and advise agency leaders and staff about public information options and programs.
(20%) Coordinates IPU activities related to internal and external communication. Communicates with program staff, unit staff, stakeholders, advocates, and others on IPU activities. Participates in activities related to program issues and activities designed to improve the IPU deliverables. Develop strategies and tools to improve social media presence.
(10%) Supports research and analysis of injury prevention and program related topics as it pertains to communication best practices. Consults with public stakeholders, interest groups (both state and national level), and HHS enterprise staff as directed by the Unit Director. Supports program and staff needs based on emerging national and state level activities.
(10%) Prepares and conducts speeches, press conferences, or meetings. Serve as primary agency liaison with the media and coordinate media visits. Responds to general inquiries about agency activities. Conducts interviews and research, verifies sources, and ensures the completeness and accuracy of print and online materials.
(5%) Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. To perform these job duties, this position may require working extra hours needed to meet defined deadlines and support the agency’s mission critical reporting requirements.

- One year of recent experience in print publications, social media content, or related field preferred.
