EMS Evaluator (EMS Instructor)
Position Summary
The EMS Evaluator ("Emergency Medical Services Instructor") delivers high-quality instruction for initial and continuing EMT education programs across King County, including EMT courses, CPR training, and instructor development workshops. This role is responsible for facilitating skills-based learning, evaluating student performance, and ensuring alignment with regional protocols and educational standards. Working within the Training & Education Section, the EMS Evaluator contributes to a standardized, systemwide approach to EMS education while collaborating with a network of instructors and agency partners. This position requires demonstrated instructional experience and provides an opportunity to support workforce development and operational readiness across the EMS system.
The EMS Evaluator is a great opportunity to directly shape the next generation of EMTs within one of the most well-regarded regional EMS systems in the country. The EMS Division offers a collaborative, mission-driven environment where instructors work alongside experienced clinicians, educators, and system leaders to deliver high-quality, standardized training across King County. Within the Training & Education Section, instructors are supported through established curricula, strong instructional frameworks, and ongoing professional development, allowing them to focus on impactful teaching and mentorship. As a short-term temporary role, this position also provides flexibility while offering meaningful, hands-on involvement in initial and continuing EMT education, making it especially appealing to both active field providers and those looking to expand their instructional experience.
This position is ideal for active field providers, current EMS instructors, and experienced clinicians seeking to contribute to regional EMS education on a part-time, temporary basis.
Background
The EMS Division is responsible for coordinating and supporting a high-performing, countywide emergency medical services system, ensuring consistent prehospital care and strategic alignment across partner agencies. Within the division, the Training & Education Section leads the design, delivery, and evaluation of initial, ongoing, and specialized training programs for EMTs, paramedics, and telecommunicators. This section manages regional curricula, instructor development, and certification compliance while advancing workforce development initiatives and systemwide educational standards. Together, the division and its Training & Education Section sustain a prepared, competent workforce and drive continuous improvement across the EMS system.

Work Schedule
This position operates on an intermittent, as-needed basis aligned with scheduled training opportunities. Work hours will vary depending on course offerings, including weekdays, evenings, and occasional weekend assignments. Instructors are scheduled based on program needs and availability, with flexibility to support initial EMT courses, continuing education, and instructor workshops across King County. Non-Exempt and FLSA (overtime) eligible.

Work is performed at various training sites throughout King County, including regional training facilities, partner agency locations, and host sites. Instructors may also support virtual or hybrid learning environments as applicable. Travel within King County is required based on course assignments and program needs.
Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
Remote and Onsite Work
Work is performed at various training sites throughout King County, including regional training facilities, partner agency locations, and host sites. Instructors may also support virtual or hybrid learning environments as applicable. Travel within King County is required based on course assignments and program needs.
The Emergency Medical Services team works in a hybrid model, with days in the office as well as telecommuting. The ratio of remote to onsite work will be dependent on business needs and is subject to change. The primary onsite location is the Chinook Building (401 5th Ave, Seattle, WA 98104).
Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support working remotely. The individual selected for this opportunity will join an innovative and progressive team that is redefining how we work as we transition to the department's hybrid environment. Employees will be provided with a County-issued laptop and must maintain a home workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.
Requirements
- Instruction: Deliver initial and continuing EMT education, including classroom, skills-based, and scenario-driven training in alignment with King County EMS curricula and protocols.
- Student Evaluation: Assess student performance through written, practical, and scenario evaluations; provide timely, constructive feedback to support learning and competency development.
- Mentorship & Development: Support and mentor new and developing instructors, modeling effective teaching practices and contributing to a positive, inclusive learning environment.
- Curriculum & Online Program Support: Assist with implementation of standardized lesson plans, course materials, and instructional updates to ensure consistency across the EMS system in both the classroom and online setting.
- Equipment Accountability & Upkeep: Maintain, inventory, and ensure readiness of training equipment and supplies, supporting safe and effective instructional delivery.
- Coordination & Communication: Collaborate with Training & Education staff, regional partners, and host agencies to support course logistics, scheduling, and program delivery.
- Compliance & Professional Standards: Adhere to all applicable policies, certification requirements, and regulatory standards, including participation in required instructor workshops and ongoing training.
Qualifications
- Current Washington State EMT or paramedic in good standing with their Washington Department of Health (WA DOH) EMS Evaluator certification.
- A minimum of three (3) years of field experience as an EMT or paramedic.
- Current, valid BLS CPR certification with AED training
- At least 100 hours of documented EMS instructional experience.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver effective, engaging instruction in both classroom and skills-based environments.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide clear feedback and support diverse learners.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team-oriented, regional training environment.
- Commitment to professionalism, reliability, and adherence to King County EMS training standards and protocols.
- Previous experience teaching within King County EMS or a comparable high-performing EMS system.
- Demonstrated experience instructing initial EMT courses, including leading full class sections and skills labs.
- Experience mentoring or developing other instructors, including participation in instructor workshops or cadre development.
- Familiarity with regional EMS protocols, BLS OTEP, and standardized training curricula.
- Current, valid BLS CPR instructor certification with AED training
- Strong skills in scenario-based instruction, student evaluation, and remediation.
- Experience with content development and delivery for learning management systems (LMS) and web-based training platforms (e.g., EMS Online/Cornerstone).
- Proven ability to manage training logistics, including equipment coordination, course setup, and multi-site instruction.
