Brief Job Description:

Performs advanced (senior level) work in the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment and circuits at the facility.  Installs and repairs electrical systems, circuits, apparatus, and electrical components of machinery and equipment. Inspects, tests, and troubleshoots electrical equipment, lighting, and power circuits.  Coordinates electrical repairs performed by others.   Advises others on electrical issues when planning maintenance projects.  Participates in planning long-range electrical maintenance programs as part of the maintenance team.  Maintains fire alarm systems and renovates electrical services.  Processes paperwork related to work orders, projects, and material requisitions. May assign work to others qualified to perform the work. Trains, coordinates, and leads the work of others in the maintenance department on projects involving electrical work. Maintains and oversees records. Works under limited supervision of the plant manager, (or other appropriate supervisor depending on facility structure), with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs):

Attend’s work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. Will serve in an on-call status on a rotating schedule as required to meet operational needs of the facility.

Correctly identifies the cause of the system or equipment failure and identifies the necessary corrective action. Takes proactive action to prevent failures.

Acts as a lead worker in electrical maintenance or repair projects. Collaborate with facilities maintenance manager to establish work schedules. Trains employees on electrical-related equipment, procedures, and safety practices. Maintains training records. Delegates electrical work to those qualified to perform it and oversees their work.

Performs inspections, adjustments, maintenance and repair work in accordance with recognized codes and standards for electrical work to ensure proper maintenance and repair. Evaluates work to be performed and determines the best method for performing electrical maintenance and repair work. Competently and safely uses job-specific equipment.

Isolates defects in wiring, circuit breakers, fuses, switches, sockets, and other elements and replaces faulty circuit breakers, fuses, switches, sockets, and other elements of electrical systems. Interprets blueprints, electrical schematics, sketches and drawings of electrical circuits.

Calculates electrical loads, wire sizes, and lengths. Mounts motors, transformers, and lighting fixtures into position and completes circuits per diagram specifications. Repairs magnetic starters and remote start-stop stations; operates and maintains high and low voltage switches; and installs rigid, thin wall, and flexible conduit. Wires circuits and cleans and tightens low voltage switch gears.

Performs repairs and renovations to modernize the electrical system in a building or building system to increase safety or efficiency. Participates in the design and planning process to ensure conformity to applicable codes and standards. Identifies necessary information such as time frames, necessary materials and other project details.

Inspects electrical work performed by contractors to ensure contract compliance.

Maintains inventory of shop equipment, supplies, materials and components. Accurately processes paperwork and maintains records on work orders, projects and material requisitions.

Communicates, orally and in writing, to facilitate maintenance-related business and promote productive work relationships

Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge Of:

  • Knowledge of general principles and theory of electricity, and safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of the repair, maintenance, and operations of electrical systems within buildings, building systems and on facility grounds.
  • Basic working knowledge of other areas within the maintenance department such as boilers, painting, plastering and carpentry, building materials, plumbing, welding procedures, HVAC, sanitation, and refrigeration.
  • Knowledge of industrial safety, fire, and safety regulations.

Skills In:

  • Advanced skill in the use of tools used in electrical repair and maintenance.
  • Skill in the general use of hand tools, power tools, and test equipment.
  • Skill in preventative maintenance and inspections of electrical systems.

Ability To:

  • Ability to follow instructions, estimate materials, apply proper methods, techniques and procedures in the maintenance and repair of electrical systems.
  • Ability to interpret drawings, schematics, or sketches.
  • Ability to organize preventive maintenance programs.
  • Ability to lead, prioritize and oversee the work of others.
  • Ability to work independently or with a team.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with co-workers and other facility staff.
  • Ability to solve problems, make decisions and use good judgment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally or in writing with other members of the maintenance and facility team.

Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications:

Position requires a valid Driver’s License and eligible driving record based on HHSC Fleet Management policy. Applicants with an out-of-state driver’s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Must possess valid TX driver’s license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. 

Master or Journeyman’s electrical license from the Department of Licensing and Regulation is preferred but not required.

Initial Screening Criteria:

1. Graduation from an accredited high school or high school equivalent is preferred.

2. Minimum of 3 years’ work in the electrical and maintenance trades.

3. Experience working in a maintenance program in a residential/commercial setting or maintaining multiple buildings is preferred.

Additional Information:

Selected candidates must be able to meet the following:

    • Perform assigned duties while wearing the required respiratory protective equipment which will be fitted for employees.
