POSITION IS LOCATED IN TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, NM

The New Mexico State Veterans' Home is located on sixteen picturesque acres in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. It provides long-term and skilled nursing services for honorably discharged veterans, their spouses, or parents of veterans killed in combat action. The facility has 131 nursing home, skilled-nursing living beds. Services for residents are provided 24/7, focusing on maintaining or improving their physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being under a personalized plan of care developed by licensed health professionals

Why does the job exist?

 
The Electrician is responsible for the safe installation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of all electrical systems throughout the long-term care facility. This includes emergency power systems such as generators, switchboards, transfer switches, and electrically driven pumps to ensure continuous operation, resident safety, and regulatory compliance.

How does it get done?

 
Install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, lighting, outlets, panels, and equipment throughout the facility.
Perform routine inspection, testing, and maintenance of emergency generators, automatic transfer switches (ATS), and switchboards.
Conduct and document generator load testing and weekly/monthly emergency power system testing per CMS, NFPA, and facility policy.
Perform electrical testing and maintenance of fire pumps, booster pumps, sump pumps, and other critical facility pumps.
Respond promptly to electrical emergencies, outages, and safety concerns.
Troubleshoot electrical malfunctions and implement corrective actions.
Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, testing, and compliance activities.
Ensure all work complies with local, state, and federal codes, including CMS Life Safety Code and NFPA standards.
Collaborate with maintenance, nursing, and administration staff to minimize disruption to resident care.
Assist with inspections, surveys, and regulatory audits as needed.
Maintain tools, equipment, and electrical rooms in a safe, organized condition.

Who are the customers?

 
The primary customer are the brave men and women that answered our nations call, executed their duties and now are unable to live in their respective communities due to failing health. This job will also support the widows of the service men and women to include parents that have lost children in combat (Gold Star Parents)

Ideal Candidate

 
Licensed or certified electrician
experience with generators, switchboards, transfer switches, and pump systems
strong knowledge of electrical codes, safety standards, CMS/NFPA compliance
reliable, punctual, and able to work independently
detail oriented

Minimum Qualification

 
High School Diploma or Equivalent and six (6) months of experience, maintaining and repairing existing electrical systems, in addition to the minimum experience requirement for journeyman electrician certificate, to include wiring, equipment, and/or fixtures in accordance with applicable currently adopted New Mexico Electric Code. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) months may substitute for the required experience. Must be journeyman certified in accordance with Construction Industries Division licensing, 60-13-1 through 60-13-59; 14.6.3.1 through 14.6.3.9 NMAC; 14.6.4.1 through 14.6.4.8; and 14.6.6.1 through 14.6.6.14, as applicable.

Employment Requirements

 
Employment is subject to criminal background check pursuant to New Mexico Caregivers Criminal Screening Act, (Sections 29-17-2 through 29-17-5 NMSA 1978 and 7.1.9.1 through 7.1.9.11 NMAC) and is conditional pending results.

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico driver's license. 

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Successful completion of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) training.

Must sign and observe confidentiality agreement.

Must be able to read, write, speak, and comprehend the English language.

Occasional travel for training & meetings and driving a State of NM owned motor vehicle may be required; Working hours may include weekends, holidays, overtime, and callback hours. Essential functions of the job and specific physical ability requirements will be available at the time of interview or may be obtained at the New Mexico Veterans' Home Human Resources office.

Working Conditions

 
Work may be performed both indoor and outdoor in inclement weather conditions. Exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT). Walking throughout the facility and frequent communication and interaction with residents, staff, and the public. Periods of walking, standing, bending pushing, pulling, lifting, and stretching for a variety of activities may be required. Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, crawl, climb, kneel, balance, push, pull, and reach overhead. Exposure to hazards such as boilers, dust, high noise levels, fumes and rodents. Must be able to function under pressure and stressful situations health hazards such as exposure to contagious viruses and diseases. May also include routine exposure to public, fellow employees, and facility resident illness, stressful situation, and bodily fluids, as well as exposure to physical and/or verbal abuse. Occasional travel for training & meetings and driving a State of NM owned motor vehicle may be required; some lifting; extended hours to meet deadlines will be required. Working hours may include on-call, nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and callback hours. On call during inclement weather. Can lift up to 35 lbs. Can lift and carry up to 51 lbs., Have the manual dexterity and mobility to climb ladders, scaffolds, antennas, and rooftops. Possess good vision/hearing. (Normal or corrected). Must wear personal protective equipment as required (i.e. Hard hats, safety glasses, safety harnesses) and respirators when required. Perform work at various heights, up to 90 'from ladders, scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks, roofs, or other safe work areas. Work in restrictive/tight areas. (i.e. switchgear rooms, crawl spaces, utility tunnels, ceilings, etc.). Essential functions of the job and physical ability requirements will be available at the time of interview or may be obtained at the New Mexico Veterans' Home Human Resources Office.
