We’re looking for a custodian to join our Housekeeping Department—a patient-focused team working together to keep VFMC clean and decontaminated. The custodian plays a key role in making sure our residents have clean clothes and linens, clean furniture to sit on, and even clean showers to bathe in, and so much more!

Job Duties:
As a custodian, you will be responsible for:

  • Cleaning, mopping, dusting and sweeping assigned areas on a daily basis. Washing Bedside Curtains, Cleaning Trash Cans, Cleaning blinds, Cleaning Bathrooms including commodes and face bowls, Mopping Dining Rooms, cleaning contaminated trash bins, decontaminating patient rooms and restrooms which contain bio-hazardous wastes, such as blood, urine, used needles, etc.  Dispose of infectious waste daily. Clean trash, cigarette butts, and wash patios around exterior buildings.
  • Stripping, buffing, and waxing floors in an assigned area regularly using required industrial machinery. Vacuuming by using a wet/dry vacuum cleaner.  Cleaning furniture, walls, baseboards, doors, mirrors and shower stalls by using chemical cleansers required for health standards.
  • Loading, unloading, and operating commercial-size washers, dryers, and other laundry equipment. Stacking laundry and linen. Shaking out linen before processing through the dryers. Checking laundry in and out against a laundry list and recording any discrepancies. Picking up and delivering linen and laundry to patient buildings. Cleaning assigned work area and equipment by sweeping, mopping, dusting, and emptying trash containers.
  • Steam cleaning outside of buildings, windows, and walkways using an industrial steam cleaner. Removing insects in lighting fixtures, bug containers, bug lights, etc. Mixing cleaning solutions to proper concentrations as necessary for various tasks. 
  • Attending in-service training required by HCFA and/or the hospital about safety, bio-hazardous materials, chemical safety, new equipment orientation, infection control procedures, etc.

Position-Specific Details:

  • Appointment Type:  Probational, Promotional or Permanent
  • Career Progression:  This position may be filled as a Custodian 1, 2 or 3
  • Work Schedule:   Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM
  • Compensation:  This position is eligible for longevity pay starting at $1.00 per hour
