The New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute provides care to New Mexicans across six different divisions including hospital level inpatient psychiatric care for both civil and forensic commitments, residential treatment for adolescents, outpatient care for people with behavioral health disorders, detox and residential substance use treatment, and skilled/long-term care. As the largest behavioral health complex in the state, inpatient/residential care is provided to over 250 New Mexicans every day, along
with 400 outpatient clients a month. There are over 600 employees across all the divisions of NMBHI to ensure high-quality treatment and care is delivered.

Why does the job exist?

 
The job of the patient care assistant exists to support residents with their daily living needs and support their overall health, safety and comfort. Patient care assistants provide hands on care such as bathing, dressing, mobility, eating and toileting. They also assist with recording vital signs, observing changes in condition and reporting concrete to the nursing team. Their role is essential in ensuring residents receive consistent, compassionate care in supporting nurses by helping to meet residents' physical and emotional needs in long term care setting.

How does it get done?

 
¿ Assists patients with daily activities.
¿ Records and maintains patient information, such as vital signs, eating habits, behavior, progress notes, treatments, or discharge plans.
¿ May obtain and record vital statistics or other health information

Who are the customers?

 
Residents of Long Term Care Division within New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute.

Ideal Candidate

 
Experience in assisting people with activities of daily living.
Experience working in healthcare.
Monitoring and assessing the health status of individuals.
Planning the nursing care of individuals.

Minimum Qualification

 
High School Diploma or equivalent.

1.SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITIONS--This position ls designated as safely sensitive. Employment Is subject to pre-employment and random testing. Employment ls subject to nationwide criminal background check and is conditional pending results.
2.CRIMINAL RECORDS BACKGROUND CHECK-Must successfully complete post offer pre-employment criminal records background check. Employment is conditional pending the results of criminal records background checks. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Successful completion of the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Working Conditions

 
Working conditions at a long term care facility are typically fast-paced and demanding, requiring staff to provide continuous, hands on care to residents. Effective 1/1/2015, the New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute became a 100% Tobacco Free/E-Cigarette Free Campus. As such, no tobacco, tobacco products or E-Cigarette products are permitted on any part of the campus.
