Assistant Controller

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant Controller is a leader of a significant function or program of NACCHO and is responsible for both setting the strategy and the results of the area. The Assistant Controller is expected to integrate complex activities within their function or program and across the organization. The Assistant Controller oversees the implementation of programs to achieve the function or unit's strategy and operating goals and is accountable for sizeable budgets, revenue generation and/or operational effectiveness.

As a leader and manager of employees, the Senior Director is responsible for planning, organizing and managing a team or functional area typically comprised of professional and support staff. An individual contributor at this level is recognized externally as an expert in their field. Positions at this level require the ability to think strategically, act independently, and mastery in a specialized area gained through professional education, training and experience; and the capacity to design, implement and manage programs important to their functional area.

The Assistant Controller, working under the general direction of the Controller, involves frequent collaboration with fellow staff, committee members, funding agencies, federal and other governmental officials, partner organizations, and local public health agencies. The work of this position requires the exercise of discretion, sound independent judgment, a high level of accountability, and the ability to maintain the trust of members of the Leadership Teams.

The Assistant Controller assists with the management of the workgroups within the programs function. This role requires significant management capabilities and/or a high level of expertise and are accountable for the results of their areas of responsibility. The Assistant Controller typically leads a significant function, department or program of NACCHO and are responsible for both setting the strategy and the results of the area. The Assistant Controller is expected to integrate complex activities within their function or program and across the organization. POSITION SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • May supervise the day-to-day activities of the accounting staff.
  • Oversee the maintenance and operations of the financial software.
  • Plans develop, and implement the overall annual and multi-year budgets; analyzing and reporting on budget activity.
  • Reviews Accounts Payable and payroll for correct coding, proper authorizations, timely payment, and regulatory reports filing.
  • Oversee the monthly close process to ensure timely production of monthly financial statements.
  • Overseas the preparation of board-ready financial statements and presents to the CFO within 18 days of the month-end.
  • Provides support to NACCHO staff who wish to receive assistance from the accounting team.
  • Conducts financial reporting, including review and analysis of monthly reconciliations and financial statements.
  • Discusses and resolves discrepancies with appropriate NACCHO staff.
  • Automates reporting systems.
  • Create new financial reports as needed.
  • Evaluates and streamlines reporting processes.
  • Assists with the annual NACCHO budget and prepares key assumptions and analysis.
  • Supervises the compilation of the annual budget from staff submissions and works with appropriate staff members to revise budgets as needed.
  • Assists with the annual financial, FS / Uniform Guidance, 403b Retirement Plan and other audits.
  • Oversee the preparation of the schedules for the annual tax returns.
  • Oversee the preparation of the annual indirect rate proposal.
  • Writes and maintains policies and procedures for financial, grant, and contract operations.
  • Participate in staff accounting training.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:

Bachelor's degree in relevant professional field with ten or more years of relevant work experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience, including a relevant certification. Master’s degree and certification in a relevant field preferred.

Preferred: Intermediate knowledge and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and governmental accounting procedures and standards (2 CFR 200 Uniform Guidance).

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or government regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Spreadsheet and Word Processing software experience required.
  • Intermediate knowledge and understanding of nonprofit financial issues.
  • Intermediate knowledge of computer applications, including a high level of proficiency in Excel and Word.
  • Intermediate knowledge of contracting.
  • Association experience preferred.
  • Spreadsheet and Word Processing software experience required.

Salary Range: $154,441 - $164,076
