The Injury and Behavioral Epidemiology Bureau (IBEB) collects data on health-related practices and health status, conducts data analysis to identify risk factors, describes the distribution of disease, and implements evidence-based injury prevention strategies. IBEB - Substance Use Epidemiology Section, in particular, conducts surveillance on substance use (including alcohol), assesses its negative health consequences, and promotes the use of effective interventions to address public health issues resulting from substance use.

Why does the job exist?

 
The Alcohol Surveillance Unit (ASU) Manager serves as supervisor of the ASU within the Substance Use Epidemiology Section (SUES). This position oversees the work of the three alcohol epidemiologists. The function of the ASUM is to oversee the designing, developing, and maintenance of data systems aimed at capturing data on alcohol use, alcohol-related morbidity, alcohol-related mortality, and alcohol use prevention efforts throughout the state. The ASUM will ensure the collaborative work of this unit with the Office of Alcohol Misuse Prevention and other operational units within DOH and other agencies. The ASU Manager will ensure a close collaboration between the CDC-funded alcohol epidemiologist and the epidemiologist undertaking surveillance tasks related to the Office of Alcohol Misuse Prevention. This is a key position for the fulfillment of the requirements of the Office of Alcohol Use Prevention.

How does it get done?

 
-Supervising personnel, including (but not limited to) time approvals and performance evaluations
-Overseeing the work of a team of epidemiologists, including (but not limited to) responding to requests of data and presentations, developing of projects, manuscripts, reports, etc.
-Coordinating the work of the Alcohol Surveillance Unit with the Substance Use Epidemiology Section, the Office of Alcohol Misuse Prevention, and other operational units within IBEB, DOH, and other agencies
-Assisting with the renewal and management of the CDC Alcohol Grant (Promoting Population Health through Increased Capacity in Alcohol Epidemiology and the Prevention of Excessive Alcohol Use CDC-RFA-DP21-2105)
-Supporting personnel by coordinating allocation of resources, training, etc.

The people of New Mexico, including those partnering with and working at NMDOH to support interventions to reduce substance use-related harms, with a focus on alcohol use.

Ideal Candidate

 
*Master's Degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Statistics, or related field.
*Three years of experience in epidemiology.
*Experience as a supervisor/manager of personnel.
*Experience working with a range of partners across state agencies, health systems, and in communities.

Minimum Qualification

 
Master's Degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Sciences, Social Sciences, or Statistics and two (2) years in Public Health to include data analysis and linking methodology. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

 
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

 
Office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT), and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting.
