This Medical Laboratory Supervisor II position will supervise the Environmental Sciences Unit’s Wastewater Surveillance Laboratory and their portion of the NC Wastewater Surveillance Center of Excellence. This laboratory is tasked with testing wastewater on a frequent basis from multiple sites to establish the presence and trends for viral and bacterial agents of public health significance in wastewater.  This position will supervise the characterization and quantification of viral nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) using digital polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods, DNA sequencing, and whole genome sequencing (WGS).  This position will review results and will require attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy. Responsibilities include establishing daily and weekly work schedules, reviewing data and final reports, employee performance reviews, performing validations/verifications of new molecular tests, writing scientific documents, implementing new molecular tests, and training staff to perform the newly implemented molecular tests.  This position also supervises the staff that contribute to the CDC-appointed Center of Excellence (CoE) for Wastewater Surveillance. The CoE promotes new testing methods while providing guidance for streamlining and optimizing the testing for existing pathogens. The CoE will provide consultation and onsite support to all states in the Southeastern United States.

The Medical Laboratory Supervisor II will:
  • Assume the supervisor’s duties for the Wastewater Surveillance Laboratory.  
  • Manage the laboratory’s portion of the Wastewater Center of Excellence. 
  • Utilizes various molecular tools to detect, identify, group, type and sub-type bacterial and viral pathogens. 
  • Perform routine testing (wastewater surveillance) which may include but not limited to: polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and digital PCR (dPCR), Sanger sequencing, and whole genome sequencing (WGS). 
  • Provide oversight of method verification and validation studies as well as Limit of Detection (LOD) studies for new methods or new instrumentation.  
  • Provide management and staff support.  
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must have previous experience testing wastewater for SARS-CoV-2 by digital PCR instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in conducting nucleic acid extraction (RNA and DNA).
  • Experience performing molecular methods such as PCR and sequencing. 
  • Must have experience handling, identifying, detecting, characterizing, and testing infectious disease agents (bacterial and viral) in a laboratory setting and in accordance to proper safety regulations.

Qualified applicants must possess, and application must clearly reflect work experience that demonstrates the following:

Bachelors degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in a laboratory in the assigned area, one of which is in a supervisory capacity; 
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Necessary Special Qualifications 
Must be capable of meeting the Federal CLIA 88 personnel requirements for a general supervisor in a laboratory performing high complexity testing.
