Job Description:

Under administrative direction, the Radiological Program Manager (V74280) plans, develops, and manages Nebraska’s statewide Radiological Health Program. This includes oversight of the Radioactive Materials Licensing and Inspection Program, the X-ray Registration and Compliance Program, and the Radiological Emergency Response Program.

This position supervises professional staff, ensures state and federal regulatory compliance, manages licensing and inspection activities, leads radiological emergency response efforts, and maintains program coordination with federal partners and industry stakeholders.

Wage: $29.176 hourly to start. $30.635 hourly after successful completion of original probation.


 

Job Duties/Examples of Work:

  • Supervise and provide technical direction to program staff in licensing, inspection, registration, and emergency response.
  • Evaluate and assign inspections and licensing actions for Nebraska radioactive materials licensees and reciprocity licensees.
  • Handle incidents and allegations in a manner that protects the citizens of the State of Nebraska and/or workers utilizing sources of radiation.
  • Ensure program readiness for radiological emergencies and serve as Emergency Response Manager.
  • Represent Nebraska as Radiation Control Program Director (RCPD) in state and national forums {e.g., Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Organization of Agreement States (OAS), Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors (CRCPD)}.
  • Maintain program records, manuals, and procedure documentation.
  • Develop, revise, implement, and provide interpretation of state/federal regulations.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders including NRC, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Department of Energy (DOE), and regional State Agreement Officers.
  • Oversee updates to NRC-required metrics {e.g., license counts, Integrated Materials Performance Evaluation Program (IMPEP) reviews).
  • Participate in biweekly staff meetings and performance evaluations; manage hiring and departures of staff.
  • Manage contracts, grants, and budgets using internal systems (e.g., Cobblestone, Clear Impact).
  • Ensure proper maintenance of radiological equipment and completion of FEMA Annual Letters of Certification.
  • Supervisory functions include recruitment and hiring, conducting performance evaluations, coordinating training and mentoring, managing workload and priorities, approving leave, addressing personnel matters, and supporting professional development.


 

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or graduate degree in engineering, biology, chemistry, environmental science, nuclear science, health physics or radiological science. Experience directly related to health physics or radiological control functions. Must be eligible for certification by the American Board of Health Physics or by the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Radiological Physics or Radiological Physics.

Preferred Qualifications:

Supervisory or program management experience, critical thinking skills, and analytical skills are preferred.
