Occupational Therapist 1-3

  • This vacancy is located in the Rehabilitation Department of Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System in Jackson, LA (East Feliciana Parish). ELMHS is the largest 24-hour, multi-site, state psychiatric complex, comprised of residential, outpatient and inpatient services.
  • *This posting may be used to fill vacancies in other divisions or units at Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System within 90 days of closing.
  • This position may be filled as either a Probational or Job Appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency wide permanent status employees); or by Detail to Special Duty. Current permanent status, classified employees may be required to accept a Probational appointed if selected. If filled as a Job Appointment, there is a possibility that this position may be converted to a Probational Appointment should funding become available.

Possession of a current Louisiana Occupational Therapist temporary permit.

Job Duties:

  • The Occupational Therapist serves within the Rehabilitation Services Department of ELMHS. Duties of this position include but are not limited to the following: 

    • 40% Provides skilled Occupational Therapy services to early, middle, and late adult clients as referred. This includes performing initial evaluations to determine specific treatment needs for new admissions and annual reassessments to determine client’s long-term functional progress. Individualized treatment plans are then developed according to patients’ needs and specific measurable objectives and proposed interventions are placed on the interdisciplinary treatment plans. Therapist then schedules treatment sessions to coordinate with other disciplines, and provides services as scheduled in group or individual sessions. Also provides coverage for OT led Competency Restoration education groups when needed. 

    • 20% Communicates patients’ progress through weekly or monthly documentation, and ensures that this documentation meets quality management standards. Also actively participates in treatment team meetings when possible, in order to provide any additional information regarding clients’ progress or changes in functional status, and to provide input or assist with formulating appropriate D/C plans. 

    • 10% Train and supervise assigned Work Therapy clients. Complete work therapy evaluations, patient time sheets, and other paper work associated with training and working with the patients. 

    • 10% Provides management and supervision of assigned staff and/or student interns as assigned by the OT Manager. This includes making fair and appropriate work assignments, overseeing treatment plan development and implementation, and conducting timely performance, planning and review sessions. Also provides direct and indirect training/education of these support staff in order to comply with performance improvement guidelines and to maintain quality care. 

    • 5% Assist with the acquisition, maintenance, and safe use of OT supplies and equipment. Ensures that inventory of supplies is maintained within budgetary constraints. Informs the OT Manager of equipment which is damaged and/or any situation which poses a safety risk for other employees or clients. Position Description SCS will keep this document for six (6) years. 

    • 5% Attends and participates in monthly departmental meetings. Participates, as an active member and representative of the Rehabilitation Services Department, on various hospital committees as assigned. Assists with coordinating and conducting OT staff meetings in order to address key issues, recognize employee accomplishments, and to prevent/resolve program problems. 

    • 5% Attends OT in-service training, workshops, films, or CPTP classes and mandatory annual birth quarter classes in order to maintain/enhance job skills and competency. 

    • 5% Participate in education trainings that are mandatory for accreditation and licensure of the facility. Perform all other duties assigned by supervisor/designee to maintain continuity and quality, accreditation and licensure requirements. Perform all other duties assigned by supervisor, but not listed, for the smooth operation of the unit/building and/or the facility. 

    • Maintains current and unencumbered motor vehicle license. 

    • Adheres to all rules, regulations, policies and procedures of LDH, OBH, Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System, and Civil Service

  • ELMHS also offers premium pay for this position:
    • Facility longevity – starting at 1.00 per hour worked.
