Why does the job exist?

 
This position will provide and administer a safe environment for residents, staff and visitors in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and New Mexico Department of Health (DOH) and Fort Bayard Medical Center policies and procedures.

How does it get done?

 
Through astute leadership and supervision, key responsibilities are enforcement of NFPA codes, OSHA, ASPR Tracie, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Veterans Administration (VA) codes.  Will be a standing member of the local emergency planning committee (LEPC) and represent the facility in the New Mexico Hospitals Partners in Preparedness coalition to ensure emergency management requirements are met.

Ideal Candidate

 
Will have:
Knowledge of NFPA, OSHA, ASPR Tracie, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Veterans Administration (VA) safety codes.
The ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies, procedures, etc., that are necessary for providing a safe environment.
The ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing practices.

Minimum Qualification

 
Associate's degree in Occupational Health, Safety, or a related field such as Industrial Safety, Engineering, Biology, or Chemistry and two (2) years of experience in a risk management or a safety related field (e.g. loss control, safety, and Worker's Compensation case management activities and/or workplace inspections). Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

 
Successful completion of a criminal background check is required.  Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.  Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification.

Working Conditions

 
Work is performed in an office setting, but may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises when conducting inspections.
Some travel may be required.
Moves intermittently during working hours.
Is subject to frequent interruptions.
Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel and visitors.
Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a minimum height of 5 feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet.
Ability to work occasional but essential overtime and required shift work.
Is subject to call back during emergency conditions (e.g., sever weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.).
May be required to work in cramped spaces and in adverse weather conditions.
State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (¿CMS¿), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.
