Position Overview

The Refugee Medical Assistant supports patient care services provided by the Refugee Clinic. The Medical Assistant is responsible for performing clinical tasks in accordance with all Harris County Public Health (HCPH) and Refugee Health Screening Program protocols. This position will work with the clinical team to create and maintain efficient, patient-centered daily clinic operations while providing comprehensive public health services to all Harris County Public Health Refugee Clinic patients seeking refugee health screening services.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist with program health screening by performing phlebotomy (including capillary and venous draws), urine collection, pregnancy tests, lead testing and vital signs and gathering patient histories.
  • Prepare and label samples (stools for parasite, blood, sputum, etc.) for transport to appropriate laboratories.
  • Provide in-room support for all clinical staff during the clinic visits as needed.
  • Maintains laboratory and exam rooms in a neat, clean, and orderly manner in accordance with infection control policies, and complete inventory.
  • Assist in performing data entry and electronic data processing by using the program EMR, Microsoft Excel, and any other related software.
  • Stock the clinic with all the equipment necessary for client screening. Assist with rotating dated stock to prevent loss.
  • Make home visits when necessary to retrieve medical records and obtain consents and/or collect specimens.
  • Perform quality assurance on all needed medical equipment.

Requirements

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Completion of a community college or business/technical school Medical Assistant program

Experience:

  • At least six (6) months of experience in a healthcare setting
  • Experience in phlebotomy

Licensure/Certification:

  • Valid Texas Driver’s License upon hired.
  • American Heart Association CPR Certification

Qualifications

Licensure/Certification: 

  • Certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA, RMA, or equivalent)

Language: 

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish, Arabic, Dari, or other language commonly spoken.

Experience: 

  • Experience working in refugee health, global health, or with underserved populations.

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:

  • This is a full-time | grant-funded position
  • Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
  • Must be willing to flex work hours when required, including weekend
  • Able to travel within Harris County as needed

Work Environment:

  • This job operates in a clinical office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands:

  • This position regularly requires lifting, carrying, and pulling objects up to 10 pounds, but it can occasionally involve handling items weighing up to 50lbs.
