Requirements
The Georgia Department of Public Health (GDPH) is seeking an EPIDEMIOLOGIST 1 to join the HAI/AR Analytics Team to assist with monitoring antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance (AUR) data using the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), the State Electronic Notifiable Disease Surveillance System (SendSS), and other data sources related to antimicrobial use. Additionally, this position assists with surveillance and outbreak response for antimicrobial resistant organisms as described below. The EPIDEMIOLOGIST 1 will work closely with Georgia healthcare providers and associations, the Georgia Public Health Laboratory, and epidemiologists in our 18 health districts.
EPIDEMIOLOGIST 1 provides assistance and expertise for conducting surveillance, investigating antimicrobial use, assisting in select AR outbreak investigations, and analyzing and interpreting data.
- Monitors and uses data from a variety of sources, including NHSN, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and SendSS to summarize and inform team needs for interventions and effectiveness of response efforts. Reviews, processes, and manages surveillance data in State Electronic Notifiable Disease Surveillance System (SendSS). Monitor, collect and analyze National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) long-term care data, including creating reports of trends and response actions.
- Develop or maintain expertise in data analysis, data visualization, and applied and molecular epidemiology.
- Assists in the implementation of appropriate quality assurance processes to maintain valid and accurate epidemiological data and reviews data for errors and initiates corrective actions.
- Analyzes data and creates reports to distribute to internal team members and to the healthcare community. Analyzes data (using Excel, SAS, R, Tableau and/or ArcGIS) and assists in the creation of reports and summaries.
- Participates in AUR surveillance, investigation, prevention and control activities; ensures that AUR information is accurate, complete and reported in a timely manner.
- Analyzes data gathered during epidemiologic investigations using appropriate statistical methods and computer software. Use epidemiologic investigation tools including Excel, Epi-Info, SAS or R to create line lists, summarize point prevalence results, develop epidemiologic curves and manage outbreak response.
- Supports the Infection Prevention Team to provide consultation for district and local field epidemiologists, healthcare facility staff, and other organizational stakeholders for outbreak responses.
- Investigates suspected or confirmed disease outbreaks; coordinate with local health departments and response team to provide response letters/recommendation feedback to facilities and other stakeholders.
- Use data and informal input from networking opportunities, outbreak investigations, and published sources to identify the educational needs of stakeholders.
- Participates in HAI/AR education, including development of toolkits, webinars, and training materials for public health or healthcare personnel audiences.
- Develop and analyze surveys designed to assess antimicrobial stewardship in healthcare settings
- Provides guidance on methods for data analysis and type of study conducted
- Gathers, compiles, and helps epidemiologists analyze data from NHSN AUR module, CMS datasets, or other projects related to antibiotic use
- Supports provider communication and implements plans to increase use of AR Laboratory testing of isolates for Expanded Antimicrobial Testing Program.
- Prepare articles, abstracts and posters for lay publications and peer-reviewed journals and scientific meetings.
- Assists with tracking, and reporting grant activities and performance measures. Specific grant activities may be assigned to the staff; these projects may be prevention-based or response-based.
- Assist with other healthcare-associated infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship activities under the direction of the supervisor.
- Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in any field from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of experience performing epidemiologic work or work in a closely related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to applicants who in addition to meeting the entry qualifications possess 3 or more of the following:
- Master of Public Health from an Accredited University with concentration in epidemiology
- Training in SAS, R or ArcGIS
- Experience analyzing HAI outbreak data and/or conducting HAI outbreak investigation
- Experience with antimicrobial stewardship programs
- Experience working or interning in state or local public health departments
- Excellent communication skills
- Broad knowledge of principles of public health practice, especially those applicable to the surveillance, prevention and control of infectious diseases
- Broad knowledge of principles of public health surveillance, including electronic disease reporting and syndromic surveillance
- Specific knowledge of principles, practices and investigative procedures of infectious disease epidemiology
- Specific knowledge of and ability to conduct statistical procedures used in epidemiological analysis including SAS and geographic/spatial analysis
- Ability to report on epidemiological studies relating to various communicable diseases
- Ability to quickly learn and accurately interpret federal, state and local laws, rules, regulations and policies relating to communicable diseases
- Ability to provide technical assistance to medical practitioners, hospital staff, public health officials, agency staff, businesses and lay people
- Ability to effectively communicate with health care professionals, state and local officials, public health officials, and laypeople, verbally and in writing and individually or in group settings
- Ability to coordinate and maintain effective working relationships with various internal and external customers and stakeholders.
