Job Summary:  

An Emergency Medical Aide provides a variety of health-related services to the community both in the field and through telephone coordination. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.

Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a variety of shifts including early mornings, evenings and weekends. Work is performed in an office, at residences and clinics and at sites of public events where there is exposure to sick and injured individuals and, at times, poor weather conditions. Work may require lifting moderately heavy equipment or injured and sick patients.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of basic triage, first aid, life support and other emergency medical techniques.
  • Skill in the use of sphygmomanometers, stethoscopes, oxygen tanks and flow valves, litters, splints and backboards.
  • Ability to enter and retrieve data from a computer.
  • Ability to determine validity of medical complaints and transportation needs.
  • Ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public.
  • Ability to complete forms and maintain records.

Minimum Qualifications:      

On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:  

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate. 

AND 

Experience: Have two years of experience in emergency medical services.

Licenses, Registrations, and Certificates: An Emergency Medical Technician-B certificate issued by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Systems is required.

Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit. PROVISIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.
