The Infectious Disease Epidemiology Bureau in the Center for Health Protection provides infectious disease epidemiology and public health surveillance services, case and outbreak investigations and data analyses statewide for the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH). The work is authorized by the New Mexico Public Health Act and governed by the New Mexico Administrative Code (7.4.3.13) Notifiable Diseases or Conditions in New Mexico. Programs in the Bureau include (but are not limited to) Foodborne Diseases, Zoonotic Diseases, HIV and Hepatitis, Healthcare-associated Infections, Data Informatics and Emerging Infections.

Why does the job exist?

 
The One Health Epidemiologist Supervisor will manage the activities and day-to-day performance of the Foodborne and Zoonotic Disease Epidemiology Programs at the New Mexico Department of Health's Infectious Disease Epidemiology Bureau (IDEB) and work as a consultant epidemiologist to the other Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) funded programs in IDEB. This position will play an essential role in studying and analyzing patterns of foodborne, waterborne, mycotic, and zoonotic diseases and will contribute to the development of effective public health interventions and strategies to prevent the spread of diseases to improve overall population health. This position will lead activities to connect traditionally siloed programs both within NMDOH and with external partners.

How does it get done?

 
The position will:

Oversee the foodborne disease team, zoonotic disease epidemiologist, and mycotic surveillance.
Design and implement surveillance systems to monitor disease trends, identify outbreaks, and evaluate the effectiveness of public health interventions.
Integrate whole genome sequencing data with epidemiological surveillance data
Analyze large datasets using statistical software to identify trends, patterns, and risk factors associated with diseases and health conditions.
Interpret and communicate epidemiological findings to relevant stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the general public.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement evidence-based strategies for disease prevention, control, and health promotion.
Provide technical expertise and guidance on epidemiological study design, data collection methods, sample size calculations, and statistical analysis.
Stay updated with the latest research, methodologies, and advancements in the field of epidemiology to ensure best practices are implemented in research and analysis.
Mentor and supervise junior epidemiologists and research staff, providing guidance and support in conducting epidemiological studies and data analysis.
The epidemiologist will lead the internal work group to explore outbreak response improvement and integration of electronic disease reporting and surveillance systems to improve infectious disease cluster and outbreak detection.
Develop and maintain relationships among external partners including but not limited to agriculture, tribal partners, vector control, ecologists, wildlife biologists and rehabilitation, environmental scientists, USDA-APHIS-WS, and academic partners.

This position will provide assurance for all activities related to the Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) grant for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that supports foodborne, waterborne, and zoonotic disease surveillance and response as well as be a consultant for other ELC funded programs. infectious disease surveillance in the state, including the response to public health emergencies.

Respond to public health emergencies as a member of IDEB, including assigned tasks appropriate for the public health response.

Who are the customers?

 
This is a senior management position in the Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity Program (ELC) at NMDOH (NM Health), ELC is a program for the prevention and control of selected infectious diseases. This is a statewide surveillance and response position focused the epidemiology of foodborne, waterborne, and zoonotic disease as well as the overall tracking of pathogens that fall under ELC funded programs.

Ideal Candidate

 
The ideal candidate will have a Master's or Doctoral degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, Biology, or a related field and a proven track record of leading and conducting epidemiological studies with data analytic software (e.g., SAS, STATA, R), including experience in data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Ideally the candidate will have a publication record in peer-reviewed journals demonstrating expertise in epidemiology, experience in applying epidemiological principles and methodologies in public health practice, experience in mentoring and supervising junior epidemiologists, and knowledge of ethical considerations in epidemiological research.  Strong written and verbal communication skills are required. Data visualization experience and Spanish language proficiency are desirable.

Minimum Qualification

 
Master's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Sciences, Social Sciences, or Statistics and two (2) years in Public Health to include data analysis and linking methodology. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

 
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

 
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds may be required. Some travel with the occasional overnight stay is required.
