The Injury and Behavioral Epidemiology Bureau (IBEB) collects data on health-related practices and health status, conducts data analysis to identify risk factors, describes the distribution of disease, and implements evidence-based injury prevention strategies. IBEB - Substance Use Epidemiology Section, in particular, conducts surveillance on substance use (including alcohol), assesses its negative health consequences, and promotes the use of effective interventions to address public health issues resulting from substance use.

Why does the job exist?

 
The successful applicant will track non-fatal drug overdoses in New Mexico, making use of a diverse set of data systems including but not limited to: syndromic surveillance, emergency medical services, and all-payer claims (medical, pharmacy, eligibility and provider files). The incumbent will link non-fatal drug overdose emergency department visits, identified through the aforementioned surveillance systems, to data from community partners offering services to substance users. The incumbent will support Overdose Prevention Section staff providing and evaluating linkage to care for New Mexicans experiencing non-fatal overdoses. The incumbent will produce reports and presentations, meet with partners, track results, and disseminate data collected to stakeholders.

How does it get done?

 
This position designs, develops, and maintains data systems aimed at capturing data on services offered to people showing on emergency departments throughout the state due to non-fatal drug overdoses. This position works closely with colleagues in Overdose Prevention Section and staff at partner organizations to collect, analyze, and interpret data related to linkage to care offered to the aforementioned cases.

The people of New Mexico, including those partnering with and working at NMDOH to support interventions to reduce drug overdose-related harms.

Ideal Candidate

 
-Master's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Statistics, or related field
-Two years of experience in epidemiology
-Two years experience with data analysis and data linkage, SAS preferred
-Experience with surveillance networks
-Experience with data management

Minimum Qualification

 
Master's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Sciences, Social Sciences, or Statistics and two (2) years in Public Health to include data analysis and linking methodology. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

 
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

 
Office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT), and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting.
