CHIEF ENVIRONMENTAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST

The preferred candidate will oversee and manage five laboratory sections in the Center for Environmental Sciences including Air Pollution Monitoring, Food and Water Chemistry, Water and Environmental Microbiology, Organic Chemistry, and Wastewater Surveillance with approximately 20 total staff. This position is part of the Rhode Island State Health Laboratory’s leadership team and assists with planning, policy & budget formulation, legislative issues, strategic goals, and provides guidance for statewide public and environmental health programs. This position also facilitates collaboration with other state and federal agencies, community health centers and national non-governmental organizations. Experience or thorough understanding of molecular microbiological methods used for surveillance of pathogens in wastewater, diagnosis of rabies in animals, mosquito testing, testing food suspected of the source of foodborne illness, use and administration of Laboratory Information Management Systems are also assets to oversight of the Center.

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES: A thorough knowledge of the principles, practices of chemistry and environmental laboratory science and the ability to apply such knowledge in organizing; directing, supervising and reviewing the work activities of laboratories engaged in providing laboratory services within the field of environmental laboratory science; a thorough knowledge of currently accepted laboratory methods and procedures, equipment materials and research techniques and the ability to apply such knowledge in achieving maximum use and proficiency of existing staff, facilities and other resources in accomplishing laboratory objectives and output of a group of laboratories; a working knowledge of all state and federal laws and regulations affecting the laboratory activities within the field of environmental laboratory science; the ability to assist a superior in planning, administering and directing all activities of the State’s environmental laboratories at the Department of Health, Division of Laboratories; the ability to interpret, implement, develop and revise laboratory policies, plans and objectives; the ability to provide consultative services in and outside the Department as well as to provide technical advice and administrative guidance to subordinate programs; ability to educate students; ability to publish scientific papers and obtain external grant funding support; and related capacities and abilities. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Education: Possession of a Doctorate in Chemistry or related sciences: and Experience: Employment in a professional laboratory position involving the performance of administrative and/or supervisory duties in directing a large environmental laboratory section or a program within a public health, medical or environmental laboratory or comparable facility. Or, a Master’s degree in Biological or Physical Sciences and 5 years’ experience in leadership of a Biological or Physical Sciences laboratory.
