This position is in the Office of Injury and Violence Prevention, which is housed in the Injury and Behavioral Health Epidemiology Bureau in the Center for Health Protection Services of the Department of Health. Currently in the OIVP there are programs to prevent community violence, gun violence, childhood injuries, sexual violence, suicide, and older adult falls. This office also manages two surveillance systems: the National Violent Death Reporting System and the New Mexico Child Fatality Review. The Office of Injury and Violence Prevention presently has over 20 positions, housed in three units: the epidemiology unit, the injury prevention unit, and the violence prevention unit.

Why does the job exist?

 
The purpose of the Adult Falls Program Prevention Coordinator is the reduce rates of adult falls related injury and death in New Mexico. This job contributes to the agency through the implementation of evidence-based or evidence-informed adult falls prevention programs, with an emphasis to prevention older adult falls injuries and hospitalizations through assessment of risks, as well as prevention through strengthening and balance building programs.
This position will identify and collaborate with community partners, including other state agencies, health care providers, senior centers, emergency response teams, health councils, and other entities as needed to build capacity and implement adult falls prevention strategies.  The work of the NMDOH promotes strategies that leverage data and resources to address social, environmental, and economic conditions that affect health equity and health outcomes. This position serves as a leader in adult falls prevention for the state of New Mexico.

How does it get done?

 
The Adult Falls Prevention Coordinator plans, organizes, and coordinates the activities of a statewide older adults falls prevention program. Part of this role is a member of the NM Adult Falls Prevention Coalition, and will serve on both the executive committee and support the general membership. This position uses data to identify community needs and to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate programs designed to encourage healthy lifestyles, policies and environments which contribute to reduction in adult falls injuries and deaths. The position oversees the program budget, including coordination of grant applications, monitoring, reporting, and associated contracts.  The position works to strengthen networks and develop resources for sustainable effective and long-term adult falls prevention programs in New Mexico consistent with state and national best practices for evidence-based falls prevention programs. The position provides subject matter expertise and leadership through the application of the public health approach and performance based project management.  The position contributes to the development of promotional materials, social media campaigns, and strategic plans, and reaches out to agency and community stakeholders to disseminate information about fall risks among older adults. The position is a member of the Office of Injury and Violence Prevention and provides support to office initiatives such as meetings of the NM Injury and Violence Prevention Coalition.

Minimum Qualification

 
Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Guidance and Counseling, Education,
Sociology, Criminal Justice, Criminology, and/or Family Studies/Services and four (4) years of any combination of experience including working with communities, working on health or social service related matters, social work/case management experience, behavioral health, and/or health care. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related
field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

 
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

 
Office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting.
