Provides supportive services in the Preventive Health clinics by assisting with client screening and related laboratory and clinical support tasks. The Technical Medical Associate (Lab Tech) must also complete fast track visits independently after meeting agency lab requirements demonstrating competency in phlebotomy. The Technical Medical Associate (Lab Tech) will provide services in the various health departments as scheduled/assigned, primarily Sumter County Health Department and Clarendon County Health Department. Other health departments and community sites may be assigned.

Client Screening: Provides and confirms completion of the DHEC-1859 (General Health History) and DHEC -2638 (Reproductive Health History) by the client the E.H.R. system. Obtains specimens for ordered lab tests and prepares and packages specimens for transport to the lab.

Client Screening Support: Retrieves and prints lab reports for nursing staff to review and delivers reports to medical records for appropriate filing for any labs prior to E.H.R. implementation. Orders and restocks screening support services supplies, Assists other members of the preventive health team with laboratory needs.

Laboratory and Related Services Support: Performs routine laboratory and clinical support duties, including, but not limited to, scheduling appointments, client data entry, ordering supplies and educational materials, collating educational packets, etc. Performs lab controls, cleans, and sterilizes surfaces and instruments, and performs appropriate autoclave maintenance, as indicated. Attends and participates in all required meetings and training sessions.

Requirements

State Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and experience or training within the specific work area.

Agency Additional Requirements: High school diploma, Completion of a SC approved certified medical assistant program of study and/or certified medical nursing assistant program.

Must be able to respond timely and appropriately to frequently changing conditions and to make recommendations concerning procedural improvement to office/maintenance operations.
Must be able to drive to outlying counties and to non-traditional settings.
May be required to travel overnight.

Employees are required to participate in disaster preparedness during hazardous weather or other public health emergency, which involves being subject to duty and or available during an emergency response via communications device on a 24-hour basis; and participates in/responds to Public Health Outbreaks and other priority response efforts.

You must possess a valid driver's license and have access to a reliable transportation. 
This position may require working early (before 8:30 am), evening (after 5:00 pm) and/or Saturday's. 
Ability to lift 30 pounds and stand for long periods of time, if required. 
 
IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS: All new employees who are healthcare providers with job-specific exposure risk are required to provide documentation of immunity or be immunized against measles, mumps, rubella, pertussis, varicella, and Hepatitis B prior to beginning employment.

Institutions of higher learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. 

Qualifications

Bilingual in English/Spanish. Preferred skilled in phlebotomy.

This position is part of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control’s (Public Health). The work performed supports DHEC’s mission to improve the quality of life for all South Carolinians by protecting and promoting the health of the public and the environment. Effective July 1, 2024, this position will transfer to the South Carolina Department of Public Health created by Senate Bill 399 which provides for the creation of the Department of Public Health to assume the public health-related functions of DHEC.
