This posting will be used to fill several internships in the Bureau of Environmental Health Services Myrtle Beach office.  
 
An exciting summer internship that uses chemistry, environmental science, and state law to keep people safe and healthy as they enjoy our SC public pools.   Gain real-life experience in a professional and field setting that will make your resume standout. College credit may also be available as part of this position. 
 
Job Functions:
 
  • This is a Full-Time Hourly Summer Season Internship for the Recreational Waters Program that begins May 17, 2024 and ends August 16, 2024.
  • This posting will remain open until filled.
  • Perform compliance inspections and follow up inspections, as needed, at pools, spas, lazy rivers, and water parks throughout the assigned areas for compliance with applicable regulations and permits.
  • Respond to and investigate complaints on pools, spas, lazy rivers, and water parks throughout the assigned areas; evaluate the potential causes or contact responsible parties to ensure the complaint is resolved in a timely manner. Monitor progress of corrective actions taken to solve problems causing unsatisfactory reports.
  • Post public notices and advisories at facilities and public locations.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • College credit may be available. Please ask your school about requirements for requesting credit for internships or learning programs.
  • This internship does not require night or weekend work.
  • Hourly Rates:
    • $13.50/Hour – New Recreational Waters Intern
    • $14.88/Hour – Returning Recreational Waters Intern
    • $15.88/Hour – Returning Recreational Waters Intern with two or more seasons of experience

Requirements

  • A high school diploma OR GED 
  • Clean driving record
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Individuals must be 18 years of age or older by May 16, 2024.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle to include driving defensively and obeying all traffic laws.
  • Must be able to swim.
  • Must be able to use field testing equipment and use a tablet for data entry.
  • Able to provide outstanding customer service in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills. 
  • Work effectively in a team-oriented environment and encourage positive working relationships with coworkers, industry, and government officials. 
  • Work independently in a field environment. 
  • Ability to successfully complete “pool school” which includes field meter certification, and on-the-job training within two weeks of hire.  
  • Work in all reasonable weather conditions and access non-traditional work environments. 
  • May require: 
    • Daily travel throughout the state. 
    • One overnight stay during the season for pool school.

Qualifications

This position is part of the South Carolina Department of Environmental Control’s Bureau of Environmental Health Services. The work performed supports DHEC’s mission to improve the quality of life for all South Carolinians by protecting and promoting the health of the public and the environment. Effective July 1, 2024, this position will transfer to the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services created by Senate Bill 399 which provides for the creation of the Department of Environmental Services to assume the environmental-related functions of DHEC.

Course Credit: Course credit may be available as part of this position. SCDHEC may assist the intern in facilitating an agreement to earn credit for his or her school, program or class; however, student applicants must receive approval from their schools in advance if they wish to receive course credit.
 
Driving Record: If this position requires the applicant to possess a valid driver's license to operate a state vehicle or personal vehicle, any applicant being considered in the final stages of selection for the position will be required to provide a certified copy of a 10-year driving record.
