The Department of Health works with others to protect and improve the health of all people in Washington State. The Office of Radiation Protection (ORP) supports this objective by working to ensure the public is protected from harmful effects and unnecessary exposure to ionizing radiation.

This position focuses on radiation safety inspections of X-ray facilities to maintain compliance, minimize radiation exposure to patients and the public, and provide technical assistance to X-ray registrants. By participating in team inspections and investigating incidents involving X-ray devices, the position supports the agency's mission to protect and improve public health. Reporting to the X-ray Section manager, this role plays a key part in achieving these objectives.

The role encompasses a range of responsibilities, including:

  • Under general supervision, perform the full range of radiation safety inspections of X-ray facilities to determine compliance with applicable regulations. 
  • Provide technical assistance on radiation safety and X-ray device-related topics.
  • Assist in the Section training program. 
  • Prepare for and respond to radiological and other emergencies.

These full-time permanent Radiation Health Physicist 2 (RHP2) have duty stations in Richland and Tumwater WA. Work is done from a remote home office, their assigned duty station or in the field.

Required Qualifications 

Experience defined below may have been gained through paid or unpaid activities. Please ensure any relevant experience defined below is outlined in your cover letter, resume, and/or applicant profile. 

 

Option 1: One year as a Radiation Health Physicist 1 in an official radiation control program. 

Option 2: A bachelor’s degree or higher in physical science, engineering (all branches), or biological science, AND two (2) years of experience in an official radiation control program.

Option 3: An associate's degree in an accredited American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) program AND one (1) or more years of radiologic technologist job experience.

NOTE: An official radiation control program is a radiation control program that is large enough to devote full-time staff to the review and control of the use of ionizing radiation with the intent of limiting and reducing human exposure to radiation.

Computer Skills: Experience will include practical skills in MS Excel for spreadsheet tasks, database management, MS Word for document creation and formatting, and Microsoft Outlook or similar email systems for electronic correspondence.

 

 

Desired Qualifications 

  • A Masters degree in radiological health, radiation safety, health physics, or related field.
  • One (1) or more years of experience in the field of Radiation Science

Conditions of Employment/Working Conditions
