Overdose Epidemiologist

Apply today! The Office of Health of Health Promotion and Prevention is looking for an Overdose Epidemiologist to support the Violence and Injury Prevention Program (VIPP). You will be responsible for analyzing data; tracking grant performance measures; evaluating grant strategies; and preparing reports, fact sheets, and articles related to the Overdose Data to Action grant. You will also work to improve the completeness and timeliness of related surveillance systems.
 
The Overdose Epidemiologist will work collaboratively with VIPP staff in establishing data measures related to program management, surveillance and epidemiology, health promotion, policy, communication, and evaluation. This position will develop and implement data plans; collect, analyze, and disseminate data; conduct evaluations utilizing surveillance data, quality assurance, program surveys, and other forms of available data; develop report of findings and recommendations; communicate findings to VIPP staff and stakeholders through written reports and/or presentations; provide data support as needed to VIPP staff and partners.

Health Insurance - Public Employee Health Program (PEHP):

  • 3 medical plan options. Choose a Traditional or High Deductible Health Plan. There is an Opt-Out Cash Benefit option for those that have other medical insurance coverage.

  • 5 dental plan options, with an Opt-Out Cash Benefit option for those that have other dental insurance coverage.

  • 4 vision plan options under EyeMed or OptiCare

Retirement - Utah Retirement Systems (URS):

  • Employees who have any service credit with an employer covered by the Utah Retirement Systems prior to 7/1/2011 are in the Tier I Public Employees System.

  • Employees hired on or after 7/1/2011 and who have never been in the URS retirement system have two options for retirement in the Tier II System. 

    • Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary between both plans (pension and 401(k))

    • Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.  

  • Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years.

Paid Time Off:

  • Annual leave and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual, 4 hours sick).

  • Annual leave amounts increase with years of service. 

  • We have 12 paid holidays.

Requirements

Principal Duties 

  • Data analysis using several systems.

  • Implement surveillance and evaluation plans.

  • Develop related publications for key stakeholders to inform prevention efforts.

  • Prepare reports, fact sheets, and articles related to the Overdose Data to Action Grant.

  • Work to improve the completeness and timeliness of related surveillance systems.

  • Track grant performance measures and evaluate grant strategies.

  • Work collaboratively with VIPP staff in establishing data measures related to program management, surveillance and epidemiology, health promotion, policy, communication, and evaluation.

  • Evaluate information against a set of standards.

Qualifications

Candidate Must Haves

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Epidemiology, Public Health, Statistics, or equivalent work experience.

  • Experience as an Epidemiologist.

  • Experience with surveillance systems.

  • Ability to work on a team effectively.

  • Ability to adhere to confidentiality agreements and rules, as well as health information privacy requirements.

  • At least (3) years of data analysis experience.


The Ideal Candidate

  • Must have experience summarizing, reporting, and interpreting data

  • Must have experience writing or drafting technical reports

  • Must have exceptional communication skills

  • Must have great interpersonal skills

  • Must have proficient project management skills

  • Experience developing and implementing data management/evaluation plans, including data collection, analysis, and dissemination to measure progress towards outcomes

  • Use logic to analyze or identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts associated with information or data to draw conclusions

  • Skill to conduct statistical analysis including compiling, coding, calculating, verifying and/or process information or data

  • Knowledge of software programs such as SAS to analyze data

  • Knowledge of the principles of program planning and evaluation

  • Evaluate information against a set of standards

  • Knowledge of evaluation criteria, methods, and techniques
Working Conditions:
  • The typical office setting for this job is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated. However, you may encounter some risks that are associated with any office setting, for example, the safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
  • Standard Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
  • This position is currently a hybrid of both in-office and remote workdays. Current in-office days are Monday and Wednesday. Possible exceptions allowed for employees 50+ miles away from work-site. Please note, a position's eligibility for remote work is established by agency management and is subject to change at their discretion at any time and for any reason.

  • You must have the ability to perform all physical work (teleworking or in-office) from within state of Utah boundaries or be able to do so no-later-than 30 days from your start date.



Physical Requirements:
  • Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
