Microbiologist Trainee

Under the direction and close supervision of a supervisory official in the Department of Health, as a trainee and productive worker, learns to conduct various routine technical microbiologic, molecular, and serologic tests/analyses in the New Jersey Department of Health Public Health and Environmental laboratory. Work will include the handling and processing of laboratory specimens, specimen accessioning, specimen preparation, reagent preparation, record keeping, supply ordering, learns to prepare reports, learns to assist in performing developmental procedures, instrumentation calibration and maintenance, and other related duties as required. Examples of duties are for illustrative purposes only, and all duties performed on the job may not be listed.

This posting is specifically for TB Laboratory; however, work may be performed in any of several laboratory areas of the Microbiology Program. The Hiring Manager will offer the details of a specific position during the screening and interview process.

Appointees who successfully complete the 12-month training period will be eligible for advancement to the title of Microbiologist 1 under Civil Service Commission procedures. The inability of an employee in this title to attain a level of performance warranting advancement to the title above shall be considered as cause for separation.

EDUCATION:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a biological science including or supplemented by twelve (12) semester hour credits in specific microbiological courses in the study of microorganisms, which include bacteriology, virology, parasitology, and/or mycology.

NOTE: Appointees may be required to perform physical activities such as lifting, carrying, and standing for an extended period 
of time.

NOTE: Appointees may be required to get vaccinations or submit vaccination records.

NOTE: Appointees may be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment.

LICENSE: Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
