Mental Health Therapist - Assessment

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is seeking a competent clinician to complete psychological and behavioral health assessments of youth at the State Training School (STS) in Eldora. STS provides rehabilitative services for young men, ages 12-18, who were adjudicated delinquent. This position includes assessments of youth admitted to STS, as well as a pre-admission, 30-day diagnostic and evaluation program that STS is working to implement. This position is full-time and has a predominately daytime schedule with some evening hours possible on occasion. We offer an excellent starting wage and outstanding benefits. A doctorate degree is preferred and a master’s degree with be considered.
 
STS offers a holistic social, behavioral, psychiatric, academic, and vocational program that utilizes counseling, treatment, and consequences paired with praise and opportunity. Services and programs provide individualized evaluation and treatment along with opportunity in the form of educational, vocational, social, and recreational programs. Transitional services are provided by the STS staff as well as contract staff in an effort to maximize each young man’s chances for success upon return to their community.
 
Qualified candidates for this position need to be proficient in:
 

  • Conducting clinical interviews and mental status examinations.
  • Administering, scoring, and interpreting various psychological assessments per the test publisher’s qualifications.
  • Reviewing collateral records and incorporating the results.
  • Writing evaluation reports and providing recommendations.
  • Guiding others on how best to implement assessment recommendations into practice and various real-life settings.
  • Providing evidence-based psychotherapy or counseling in individual, group, and/or family settings when needed.
  • Working as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team. 
  • Managing a diverse caseload of testing and therapy (if needed) cases and meeting deadlines.

Working at STS comes with a special perk! This location offers access for staff to the impressive on-campus gym during off student hours. This includes 3 full size basketball courts, two fully stocked weight rooms with machine and free weights, showers, and lockers. We also provide a cardio room for staff only featuring exercise mats and advanced treadmills and stationary bikes. Usage of these resources is completely free for all STS staff.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification: 

1) Graduation from an accredited college or university with a doctorate degree in psychology, behavior analysis, or counseling. 2) Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in psychology, behavior analysis, social work, or counseling, and experience equal to two years of full-time clinical work in the provision of counseling and therapy in an institutional or community mental health, intellectual disability, long-term care, or correctional program. 
3) Possession of a license to practice psychology from the Iowa Board of Psychology. 
4) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes twelve months of full-time work as a Psychologist 1.

  • Designated positions at the Glenwood and Woodward Resource Centers require certification with the Behavior Analyst Certification Board as a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst, or require such certification within a period of time after hire as determined by the appointing authority.
