Junior Soil Evaluator (Environmental Health Manager I)

This position serves as a Junior Soil Evaluator for the Bureau of Environmental Health Services, Sumter office. You will be performing inspections, evaluations, and investigations outdoors in support of DHEC's vision: Healthy people living in healthy communities.
Job Functions:
- Conducts system layouts and permits suitable sites according to state regulations and policies.
- Conducts inspections of installed onsite wastewater systems to ensure compliance with state regulations.
- Investigates complaints, determines validity, and makes recommendations for corrective actions.
- Prepares reports and referrals of a professional and technical nature for enforcement activities. Recommends corrective actions for violations.
- Provides consultation to the regulated community and public on state laws, regulations, and standards.

Requirements
- An associate degree in a related technical field;
- OR high school diploma or GED, AND two (2) years of environmental health or related experience. Certification in the environmental field qualifies as related experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Able to provide outstanding customer service in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Work effectively in a team-oriented environment and encourage positive working relationships with coworkers, industry, and government officials.
- Work independently in a field environment.
- Ability to successfully complete prescribed technical coursework and pass any test relevant to the position within the probationary period or trial period.
- Work in all reasonable weather conditions and access non-traditional work environments.
- May require:
- Daily travel throughout the state.
- Occasional overnight travel.
- Participation on the Environmental Response Team and is subject to on call or call back 24/7.
Qualifications
- Familiarity with onsite wastewater methods and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Training or experience in describing or classifying soils.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
