The Industrial Wastewater Engineering Associate serves to control environmental effects of industrial wastewater and sludge by developing National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and land application No Discharge (ND) permit conditions and by reviewing treatment and pretreatment facility engineering reports, plans and specifications.  The Federal Facilities Agreement (FFA) should be considered in permitting decisions.   Provide basic engineering review responsibility to accomplish the above.
 
Job Duties include: 
 
  •   Assist in the review of Savannah River Site (SRS) High Level Waste tank and D-Area closure plans and assist with related public participation activities.   Coordinate with other Bureau of Water (BOW) personnel and DHEC program areas on closure plans, including the FFA and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) programs.
  • Assist in the review and permitting of NPDES discharges and review activities associated with the Savannah River site, particularly related to High Level Waste Tank Farm and D-Area closure. Draft NPDES permit conditions for industrial wastewater discharges and ND permit conditions for land application of industrial sludge and wastewater for review by supervisor using applicable regulations, policy and guidance.  Finalize permits for issuance.
  • Assist in the review and permitting of basic construction projects and review activities associated with the Savannah River site, particularly related to High Level Waste Tank Farm and D-Area closure.   Review basic engineering reports, plans and specifications for industrial wastewater treatment and pretreatment facilities and prepare construction permits for review by supervisor using appropriate regulations, policy and guidance.  Finalize permits for issuance.
  • Hold conferences with industrial representatives, consulting engineers, and the public.  Arrange and direct meetings toward suitable, specific conclusions.  Provide information using appropriate regulations, policy and guidance.

Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in engineering. The education must qualify the applicant to become registered as a Level A Professional Engineer in South Carolina and must meet one of the education requirements outlined on the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulations website found at: https://llr.sc.gov/eng/PDF_Files/LicensureQualificationInformationSheetExam.pdf. If the applicant is utilizing the ‘substantially equivalent education’ pathway, the approval letter from LLR must be final at time of application. 
 
Institutions of higher learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
