The Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services, within the Department of General Services (DGS), is always looking for talented scientists and support staff with diverse skills who can help fulfill our laboratory's mission.

Job Duties

The Department of General Services, Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services (DCLS) seeks a qualified candidate to serve as The Group Manager for the Inorganics and Water Micro Testing Laboratory Group. This group performs high volume testing of Drinking Water and Environmental waters in support of the Commonwealth’s public health programs. The selected candidate will be responsible for management of all laboratory activities performed in this group and the professional development of laboratory staff. This testing is conducted for several state monitoring programs managed by the Virginia Department of Health, the Department of Environmental Quality, and various community monitoring groups. The Group Manager oversees the employees’ time, sets work priorities to ensure all testing is completed in an accurate and timely manner, and follows the laboratory’s established quality management system to bolster regulatory compliance.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Supervisory management and team leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively provide customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate, lead, organize and prioritize work of others.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing and work in a team environment.
  • Ability to compile and formulate data, draw conclusions and provide interpretations of data.
  • Knowledge of Quality Assurance programs & safety principles/practices.
  • Knowledge of laboratory science with experience in areas such as: clinical and/or analytical chemistry, biochemistry, biology and/or microbiology.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds.



Additional Considerations

  • Knowledge of laboratory accreditation requirements (i.e. TNI, ISO, etc.), and QA/QC interpretation.
  • Knowledge of electronic exchange of lab data, instrument interfacing of laboratory equipment.
  • Skill in the application and operation of complex laboratory equipment and laboratory information management systems necessary for the analysis of specimens and reporting of test results.
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic statistical methods.
  • Computer skills including the ability to create spreadsheets.
  • Knowledge and experience in compliance with federal, state and local requirements, regulations or laws.
  • Knowledge of general and fiscal management practices.
