Government Affairs Intern

NACCHO has an opening for a Government Affairs Intern for summer 2024, beginning in early June with flexibility to meet a selected candidate’s availability. The Government Affairs Intern will support the Government Affairs team with an overall goal of achieving results in advancing NACCHO’s legislative and policy priorities. The Intern will have an opportunity to learn about federal policymaking, government affairs, and grassroots advocacy across a range of public health issues important to NACCHO’s members.

POSITION SPECIFIC DUTIES:

The Government Affairs Intern will be responsible for supporting the functions of NACCHO’s Government Affairs team. Work duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Contributing to, formatting, and disseminating electronic newsletters.
  • Drafting letters, testimony, and other communications to Members of Congress.
  • Attending and reporting on congressional briefings and hearings.
  • Summarizing and developing information for internal and external dissemination (e.g. NACCHO publications, electronic newsletters, and websites).
  • Reviewing, editing, and developing advocacy materials for NACCHO members.
  • Conducting legislative and policy research.
  • Support GA team in advancing policy priorities through various tasks including, but not limited to, data entry and submission, meeting preparation, and initiative tracking.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:

  • Master’s student in public health, health education, public policy or related field preferred but not required.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Interest in learning about non-profit advocacy and government affairs.
  • Knowledge of office practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Familiarity with public health practice and policy, and/or federal policymaking a plus.

WORK HOURS:

Hours are negotiable and flexible between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:30 pm, for at least 20 hours per week. NACCHO has a hybrid work environment and days/hours in-office are flexible. Ideally, the Intern can be in-office at least one day per week.

SALARY:

The internship is unpaid. NACCHO will work with the Intern to facilitate academic credit.
