Duties

The Director, Division of Oral Health:

  • Directs and manages the operations of the Division with primary responsibility for providing leadership and guidance to Division staff. Plans, coordinates, manages, and evaluates all Division activities. Promotes and develops new training-related initiatives. Determines allocation of human and financial resources for the Division and assures compliance with related legal requirements.
  • Executes the administrative and personnel management responsibilities related to the accomplishment of the mission assigned. Plans organizational structures, staffing needs, etc.
  • Determines the Division's overall policies and approaches to be followed to achieve the mission of the Division.
  • Develops and maintains relationships among a variety of public health officials nationally and internationally, including research scientists, medical professionals, academic institutions, other government agencies, and state and local health departments. Coordinates research activities, legislative proposals, regulations, policies, program issues, and resources.
  • Develops goals and objectives and provides leadership, policy formulation, and guidance in program planning and development. Coordinates Division activities with other components of CDC and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), as well as other Federal agencies.
  • Plans, develops, and implements the Division's policy and program objectives, develops operating plans, and evaluates progress. Develops specific projects and activities from broad program goals through the application of sound managerial and leadership concepts and practices, with a view toward enhancing the national impact of the Agency's activities. Maintains continuous crucial review of all policy and project objectives of the Division and ensures that overall program plans are carried out as efficiently and effectively as possible with maximum utilization of resources.
  • Performs non-clinical duties involving the evaluation of medical research or the identification of causes or sources of disease or disease outbreaks.

Qualifications

Current federal employees must be at or equivalent to the GS-14 grade level or above to be considered for this position.

Basic Requirements:

Education: Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from a school approved by the American Dental Association (ADA), or the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

AND

Licensure: Applicants must have passed National Board of Dental Examinations (NBDE) which are developed and administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

AND

In addition to meeting the above basic requirement and licensure requirements, applicants must complete one year of professional dentistry work that is equivalent to GS-14; or equivalent experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, and/or training.

Qualifying experience involves evaluation, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, injuries, and disorders of the oral cavity and maxillofacial area.

Examples of dentistry experience may include the following:

  • removal of decay;
  • filling cavities;
  • straightening, extracting, and repairing teeth;
  • treating gum disease;
  • performing corrective surgery;
  • making measurements/models for dentures to replace missing teeth;
  • administering anesthetics;
  • writing prescriptions; and
  • performing other requirements of the position.

Some examples of qualifying experience are:

  • Experience in a clinical setting, administering of local anesthesia, monitoring vital signs, performing exodontia, removal of impacted teeth, soft tissue surgery, and incisional and excisional biopsies.
  • Experience in general dentistry to include radiologic techniques and interpretation, periodontal and endodontic therapy. To include root planing, furcation management, periodontal therapy, and splinting, and endodontic treatment of multi-rooted teeth.
  • Experience in the treatment planning and treatment of restorative and prosthetic care. Provide and direct and indirect restorative procedures. Design and construction of simple and complex removable prostheses including partial, full, and overdentures.

Medical Requirements:

Applicants must be able to distinguish shades of color.

Specialized Experience:

Candidates must also show clear evidence of specialized experience.

Specialized experience is that which is directly related to the position and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, such as experience directing the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of chronic disease prevention activities that support public health prevention efforts, particularly where oral health is concerned.

Typically, experience of this nature is gained at or above the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service or its equivalent with state or local government, the private sector, or nongovernmental organizations.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Additional information

The executive level compensation package is commensurate with qualifications and experience and may result in a higher salary than reflected above. This position is located in the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) , within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in Atlanta, Georgia.
