Custodian

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is seeking a Custodian to join the team at the State Training School (STS) in Eldora, which provides supportive counseling and behavioral health treatment for young men, ages 12-18, who were adjudicated delinquent. This is a full-time position with a Monday - Friday, 10:00 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. schedule and opportunity for advancement, growth, and development.

The primary responsibility of the Custodian is to clean assigned areas so that a sanitary environment is maintained. This position washes, disinfects, dusts, and/or polishes various surfaces (including metal, concrete, plaster, and drywall), all flooring, restrooms, dining areas, counters, handrails, and other fixtures, and removes garbage. Additional seasonal duties include removal of snow from steps, sidewalks, and entryways, and other projects as assigned. Work must be completed in a timely and efficient manner utilizing proper housekeeping and safety protocols.  

The successful candidate will be able to:

  • Follow directions that are given verbally, electronically, and/or in writing. 
  • Effectively express and comprehend ideas and concepts, both written and verbal. 
  • Work with minimal supervision, demonstrating responsible behavior and attention to detail.
  • Work in resident rooms, public areas, and office areas with little disturbance to occupants.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:


1) Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency.
2) One year of full-time work experience in commercial building maintenance or housekeeping.
