Communications Consultant 3 (CC3) Part-time, Project DOH8073

This recruitment announcement is for a part-time, project Communications Specialist 3 (CC3) position with the Washington State Board of Health (SBOH) anticipated to be funded through June 30, 2025. As a result, this position is not eligible for a Department of Retirement Services benefit for the duration of the placement. During the 2024 legislative session, the Legislature included in the supplemental operations budget a proviso that requires the Board to review and update rules for school environmental health and safety. These statewide rules apply to public and private schools. The Board must conduct the review in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary technical advisory committee to propose a new set of minimum statewide health and safety standards for schools.

This Communications Consultant reports directly to the School Rule Manager, working collaboratively with fellow staff, leadership, and members of the Board and Technical Advisory Committee to fulfill the stipulations outlined in the budget proviso. Additionally, it involves advancing the broader mission and initiatives of the Board, particularly in the realm of school environmental health and safety.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating public meetings
  • Managing external digital communications
  • Handling media relations
  • Ensuring proper records retention and responses

 

Work setting.

 

This position has a duty station located in Tumwater WA, with working hours scheduled between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays (flexible schedules are available). Occasionally, at the request of the supervisor, the incumbent may need to work beyond these hours to meet deadlines or attend Board or Technical Advisory Committee meetings. Adjustments to the regular schedule may also be made during peak workloads or in response to meeting commitments.

The Board achieves this mission by monitoring the public’s health to understand and prevent disease across the state; serving as a public forum to engage the public in policy development; and adopting foundational public health rules that prevent disease, promote public health, and keep people safe. Required Qualifications 

 

Option 1: A bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Health Promotion, Public Relations, or related field and three years of professional writing/editing experience (or equivalent education/experience). Experience may be gained concurrently. 

 

Option 2: Five or more years of experience in communications, journalism, or public relations that includes professional writing/editing experience.

 

AND for either option, the incumbent must have:

 

  • Two years of professional experience working with social media for a public, private, or non-profit organization.
  • Two years of professional experience with websites for a public, private, or non-profit organization.

 

 

Desired Qualifications 

 

  • Experience or formal training with digital tools such as Drupal, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, and Audition) and data visualization software such as Tableau or Microsoft Power BI. 
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of graphic design and branding standards.
  • Knowledge of strategic communications and communication research methods.
  • Knowledge of AP Style, AMA Style, and Plain Talk Principles
  • Proficiency in SharePoint
  • Demonstrates a high level of cultural humility.
