As a Clinical Laboratory Evaluation Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in safeguarding public health through your work at the Alaska State Public Health Laboratories. Here’s what you’ll be focusing on:
- Quality Assurance: You’ll conduct thorough audits and reviews, ensuring that laboratory processes meet the highest standards. Your keen eye for detail will be crucial in validating staff training and standard operating procedures.
- Continuous Improvement: Your analytical skills will come into play as you develop and implement corrective actions and quality control procedures. You’ll use statistical analysis to identify and resolve any issues, maintaining the laboratory’s reputation for excellence.
- Education and Support: You will serve as a mentor and educator, providing essential training to laboratory inspectors and workers. Your expertise will also extend to assisting in the assessments of clinical laboratories across Alaska, contributing to the state-wide commitment to quality healthcare.

- Compliance: Knowledge of procedures for assessing, evaluating, and monitoring programs or projects for compliance with Federal laws, regulations, and guidance.
- Quality Assurance: Knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools of quality assurance and quality control used to ensure a product fulfills functional requirements and standards.

Requirements
A PhD from an accredited college in laboratory medicine, epidemiology, biostatistics, bacteriology, parasitology, mycology, virology, microscopy, proteomics, immunology, hematology, life sciences, chemistry, chemical or biomolecular engineering, forensic chemistry, biochemistry, biophysical chemistry, geochemistry, environmental chemistry, or a closely related field;
AND
One year of journey or full performance level professional experience performing biological, microbiological, chemical, biochemical, or closely related testing in a certified diagnostic laboratory utilizing a quality management system. This experience may be met by service as a Microbiologist 2, Public Health Microbiologist 1, Chemist 3, or its equivalent with another employer.
OR
A master's degree from an accredited college with a major in laboratory medicine, epidemiology, biostatistics, bacteriology, parasitology, mycology, virology, microscopy, proteomics, immunology, hematology, life sciences, chemistry, chemical or biomolecular engineering, forensic chemistry, biochemistry, biophysical chemistry, geochemistry, environmental chemistry, or a closely related field;
AND
Two years of journey or full performance level professional experience performing biological, microbiological, chemical, biochemical, or closely related testing in a certified diagnostic laboratory utilizing a quality management system. This experience may be met by service as a Microbiologist 2, Public Health Microbiologist 1, Chemist 3, or its equivalent with another employer.
OR
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college with a major in laboratory medicine, epidemiology, biostatistics, bacteriology, parasitology, mycology, virology, microscopy, proteomics, immunology, hematology, life sciences, chemistry, chemical or biomolecular engineering, forensic chemistry, biochemistry, biophysical chemistry, geochemistry, environmental chemistry, or a closely related field;
AND
Four years of journey or full performance level professional experience performing biological, microbiological, chemical, biochemical, or closely related testing in a certified diagnostic laboratory utilizing a quality management system. This experience may be met by service as a Microbiologist 2, Public Health Microbiologist 1, Chemist 3, or its equivalent with another employer.
Special Note:
Incumbents may be required to pass a security clearance as set forth in 42 CFR 72, 42 CFR 73, 42 CFR 1003, Public Law 107-56 and Public Law 107-188.
Some positions may require specialization within a single scientific discipline (i.e., chemistry/physical or the biological/life sciences) and eligibility for certification as a Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, or similar designation, by a nationally recognized agency such as American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), National Certify Agency for Clinical Laboratory Personnel (NCA), or American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB) per 42 CFR 493, Subpart M; 493.1449; 493.1461; or 493.1489 (CLIA88 Personnel Standards for High Complexity Testing.
