As a Public Health Registered Nurse II at the Monroe County Health Department, you will join a dedicated group of public health professionals working to protect the health and well-being of communities across the state by supporting vital public health initiatives. Requirements

Under general supervision, provides direct patient care services as an expanded role nurse. Focuses on the prevention of illness, injury or disability, the promotion of health and maintenance of the health of populations. Cares for population with special needs during disasters/emergencies and biological and chemical protocols.


Primary Duties & Responsibilities


  • Demonstrates knowledge of and exercises good judgment in the execution of patient care protocols.

  • Orders appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments and administers medications and vaccines in accordance with protocol.

  • Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic testing and interpret the results to direct treatment.

  • Provides patient education and makes appropriate referrals. 

  • Facilitates patient decision making by providing health education, counseling, and tools

  • Provides thorough documentation of medical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, referrals, education, and consultations in the electronic medical record system.

  • Performs women’s wellness services, contraceptive counseling, and contraceptives according to protocol.

  • Responsible for maintaining knowledge of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP) and enrolling eligible patients into the program.

  • Provides assessment, screening, and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases according to protocol.

  • Administers tuberculosis testing, interprets results and works with the TB Program Coordinator to support follow-up and treatment.

  • Provides child health, vision screening and supports the provision of other primary care services as needed.

  • Performs onsite waived lab testing offered by the HD, performs wet preps, and participates in lab QA/QI.

  • Responsible for maintaining knowledge of programs and services available through the Department of Public Health and external agencies and providing referrals to eligible infants, children, and adults.

  • Consults with and refer patients to physicians and other care providers as indicated.

  • Promote public health in the community through education about resources and programs.

  • Participates in meetings and contributes to District program goals and objectives as needed. 

  • Participates in peer review according to protocol requirements.

  • Participates in emergency preparedness planning and response activities.

  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

Associate degree in nursing from an accredited college or university and one (1) year of nursing experience and completion of a PHN course within one year of hire and current Georgia Registered Professional Nurse license and CPR certification; or one (1) year of experience at the lower-level PH Registered Nurse 1 (HCP190) or position equivalent.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing. 

  • Knowledge of Ga DPH Nurse protocols.

The use of physical activity breaks during the workday is authorized to support this philosophy and help employees meet their wellness goals. A maximum of 30 minutes of physical activity may be allocated per workday, typically in the form of two 15-minute breaks or one 30-minute break.

DPH accepts educational credentials recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and/or the US Department of Education (DOE) as valid. DPH will contact educational institutions to verify degrees, diplomas, licensures, and other relevant credentials.

The candidate selected for this position may be subject to pre-employment drug screening and a criminal background check.
