This vacancy is located in the Forensic Community Services Department at Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System in Jackson, LA (East Feliciana Parish). ELMHS is the largest 24-hour, multi-site, state psychiatric complex, comprised of residential, outpatient and inpatient services.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been in forensic health services:

A master’s degree in a social science field, social work, behavioral health field, public health, education, or health administration plus five years of experience providing behavioral health treatment; OR

A Juris Doctorate plus four years of experience providing behavioral health treatment; OR

Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice as a Licensed Master's Social Worker (LMSW), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or Certified Social Worker (CSW) plus four years of experience providing behavioral health treatment.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:
EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED.

  • Provides direct supervision over Forensic District Coordinators and as such, assesses workloads, evaluates performance, approves leave, trains staff, and recommends corrective actions as needed.
  • Supervises the coordination of the forensic aftercare and monitoring system for individuals with mental illness who are under the supervision of the Criminal Justice and Mental Health systems.
  • Trains new staff in providing competency restoration services to pre-trial clients in a jail-based setting and/or within the community.
  • Provide guidance to lower-level employees in technical aspects of cases.
  • Attend court hearings with subordinate staff to provide assistance and may be required to testify when needed.
  • Conducts visits to clients home in hazardous environments and to community-based group homes.
  • Provide assistance to subordinate staff in recommending clients/patients for orders of protective custody through law enforcement, a coroner's emergency certificate through the coroner's office, or physician's emergency certificate through the mental health provider, hospital emergency room, forensic consultant, etc. or for placement at Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System.
  • Oversees subordinate staff in providing consultation and assistance regarding services for clients.
  • Recommends revision of program standards and agency policy, as necessary.
  • Provides technical assistance, training and consultation to agency staff, contract providers (physicians, psychologists, nurses and social workers), Sheriffs, State Probation, Judges and Coroners and other personnel of the Criminal Justice System regarding delivery of services to individuals with mental illness who are under the supervision of or in the custody of a Criminal Justice System.
  • Monitor and evaluate the quality of service delivery and progress of program goals and objectives, and formulates plans for corrective action.
  • Travels throughout assigned region frequently and statewide occasionally to perform job duties.

Position-Specific Details:
This position may be filled as a Probational (open to all qualified applicants); a Promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency wide permanent status employees), or by Detail to Special Duty; Current permanent status, classified employees may be required to accept a Probational appointed if selected for a full-time position.
