Are you a current undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in Public Health, Community Health, Health Promotion, or other related field? Do you enjoy researching meaningful topics and producing reports? If so, then the Office of Health Promotion and Prevention would love to have you apply as an Intern supporting the Tobacco Prevention and Control Program (TPCP) and the Youth Electronic Cigarette, Marijuana, and Other Substances Program.

In this role, you will assist with projects that facilitate the prevention of youth nicotine dependence, reduce commercial tobacco product use, and focus on work with priority populations to reduce tobacco related health disparities. You will be responsible for research and reports. You will be providing support and assistance with a variety of projects, special assignments, or research supporting the TPCP.  In order to be successful in this position you need to have the ability to perform research using the Internet & other computer related resources, and be able to compose and produce reports, documents, and related materials while possessing proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive.

Responsibilities

Principal Duties

  • Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings to allow for opportunities for collaboration as well as provide updates on current activities.

  • Consult and collaborate with subject matter experts on assigned activities.

  • Research and evaluate Utah tobacco policies.

  • Develop recommendations, reports, guides based on research findings.

  • Assist with needs assessments and data analysis as needed.

  • Create coalition recruitment materials

Qualifications

Minimum Qualification

  • Enrolled in or recently graduated from a college or university program in public health, community health, health promotion or a related field.
  • Proficiency in using the internet, computer applications and software (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite, Google applications).
  • Knowledge of the principles of public health.
  • Strong planning, organization and communication skills.
  • Problem solving and team work skills.
  • Dependable and self-motivated and the ability to work independently
  • Preference may be given to current undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in Public Health, Community Health, Health Promotion, or other related field.

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions:

  • The typical office setting for this job is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated. However, you may encounter some risks that are associated with any office setting, for example, the safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
  • Standard Schedule is Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 10 - 20 hours per week. Days and Hours may fluctuate as needed.
Notes: 
  • This is an indefinite, non-benefited position eligible to work up to 20 hours per week. Your assigned schedule can be made flexible to accommodate availability. This position is eligible for remote work.
  • You must also have the ability to perform all work (office or teleworking responsibilities) from within State of Utah boundaries, no-later-than 30 days from your start date.
  • Preference may be given to current undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in Public Health, Community Health, Health Promotion, or other related field.

Physical Requirements:
  • Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
